Hello guys, got a zzr600 and done about 10k miles on it. So far only put new brake pads and fitted a braided line.

I was out riding the other day when the brake lever suddenly got a bit 'jerky' and stiff. Normally light finger action will be enough, but I had to apply more pressure and it 'jerked' and braked a bit harshy.

Most of the time it's fine, but now and again this has suddenly started to happen. Then it goes back to normal if i pump the brakes a few times, Are my brakes starting to seize?

Worth mentioning a few hundred miles ago i bled the brakes and added the braided line. The brake was a wee bit spongy, could it just be it's settled in and got a bit stiffer?

Cheers.

Take the calipers off the bike and have a look at the pistons I guess? Pump em out a bit and give them a good clean/see if you have any gunk/rust on the sides/by the seals?

Spray WD40 on the pivot on the brake lever then work it a few times. Sounds like its stiff.

Well it's pissing down at the moment so I'll wack some oil on the pivot tomorrow. If i still get trouble I guess I'll have a look at the seals. Thumbs Up cheers.

You are very jammy if you have gotten away with 10k miles without splitting and overhauling the calipers. This is something which needs to be done regularly on these bikes.

It is due to the design of the caliper. The gap between the piston and the case of the caliper is quite big, allowing dirt to get past the dust seal more easily.

Usual permanant fix is to fit nissin 4 pots as their pistons are almost flush with the casing of the caliper (dont have these calipers myself due to being scottish/tight, but think it's cos they have a deeper recess for the dust seal) so need overhauling less frequently.

I get this on mine now and again.,

Its the pistons getting stuck in caliper. remove the pads, put fat allen key or spanner across the caliper and pull leaver to get pistons to come out. Spray with Brake cleaner and push back in

Repeat process till the pistons all work freely.

Repeat on other side.

I have to do this every 2-3 months on mine.

Sad

+1 for the pivot although I wouldn't use WD40, clean it up then wack a loads of grease in there. I can't imagine WD40 lasting long.

Yeah mine started doing that too. I soon enough bought some Nissins from a CBR600RR and put them on instead. So much better!
