 |
|
Many years ago I used to write in C to .exe in Microsoft C and in Turbo C as well as in an interpreted ANSI C system programming environment and was comfortable with this but that was back in the early 90s.
I'm now trying to develop a Windows program using C# in VS2010.
Several key problems:
1. Slow brain... Now 52.
2. Long time ago
3. Don't really like modern IDEs
4. Understand the concepts of OO but not the application of OO (much of it seems so bloody unnecessary)
5. Don't know enough about the differences between ANSI C and C#
6. Bought "C# 4.0 The Complete Reference" by Herbert Schildt and leaning on that, though it should be "C# 4.0 The Incomplete Reference".
I was going to write it in VBA within Excel but that was truly horrible!
The program is basically to be a fancy parser that produces a neutral output of data in csv, xls etc.
Application configs are probably going to be in XML as are the parser rule-sets (defined by the user within the application).
Now the question. Is there anyone in my local[ish] area that would like to do some tuition/mentoring for a fee? I'm in Bognor Regis.

Do you need a swooshy GUI, or are you just number crunching?
If the latter, I'd suggest having a look at Perl. It just gets stuff done.
If you're married to the idea of using C# then you'd be as well blagging someone else's source and modifying it as necessary. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

It relies on user input in a datagridaray so the user can mouse-over similar to using a highlighter pen.
It crunches data as the user mouses over (well just after in real terms).
If it was just crunching data it'd be fine as I would use C and be a very happy bunny. ____________________ 22PlusY

Thanks for the replies.
Frost:
Yes it is highly dependent on the UI.
Daemonoid:
I guess I was just laying -out the obstacles as I see them. I am actually a positive person but do find modern IDEs very confusing. In the past 90% of my work would have been in functional programming with very little UI.
I looked at many different routes for this application but recognised that I need to get myself up to speed with current methods and tools.
The long gap is probably my biggest hurdle as it is not the leap that is the problem it is the letting-go. Much of the resource I have found is about learning from scratch rather than converting or 'upgrading'.
I hadn't tried coursera though have just had a look at it. I have used Stackoverflow and msdn but these are really about getting a specific answer to a specific question and I am conscious of not trying to get my code free of charge.
Again, thanks for your time. ____________________ 22PlusY
