This or this?

Freezing this morning had to bump start.

I need one immediately which is why I am stuck with Halfords.

If you've not drained the battery it will be on the way out - get a new one.

The bike specific one comes with the little cable you attach to your battery and then plug the charger into, i'd go for that one.

Unless you have a car you sit up during the winter as well, in which case get the other one and rotate the charging

what happened to you happened to me and i behaved like you and denied the truth that the battery is dying.

if the battery needs a bump start on a cold morning then its on its way out. it should start regardless

save your time and money and buy a motto battery for your bike which should be no more than £40 which is 4 pints of beer more than the charger

Is the current battery 'maintenance free' ? If not, make sure it's topped up with DI water.
If it is indeed 'maintenance free', then make sure you're getting ~14volts when the bike's running - if so then dump it and buy a gel battery.

its the time of year for batteries to die, My car battery is also on the way out too. Barely holding enough charge to power the lights and radio with engine off. Still starts ok, providing you don't drain the battery but you can tell when a battery is on the way out.

As above get a multimeter and check the charging voltage, if ok get a new battery.

How old is the one on there currently?

Also halfords are totally overpriced, one on ebay for under a tenner posted which is a trickle charger with auto cut off, which is what you really need.

1.25 amps charging is a bit high for some batteries according to the halfords link. Slow chargers are best

Get yourself an Optimate 4. It's a smart charger that will charge your battery at the optimum charge rate for its state of charge and will also maintain the battery's condition if it's used regularly. Thumbs Up

My ER5 hadn't been started since early September, last weekend I decided to give it a ride around the block - the battery still had enough juice to let me crank it for about 20 seconds (I forgot about choke, then succeeded in flooding it - then eventually got it started) - but the battery didn't flinch once. It has a 12aH gel battery that I bought over 12 months ago.

A trickle charger on a regularly used bike is definitely an Elasto-plast covering another problem.

Not necessarily. If the bike has an alarm immobiliser fitted then there's a constant drain that will flatten the battery over time. That's where a smart charger comes into its own especially over winter months when the bike might not be ridden regularly. They also remove sulfate deposits that reduce the battery's efficiency. Wink

If I had to choose, I'd go with the second one. You don't want more than 750mA going into a bike battery.

But ideally neither, they're both overpriced. Lidl will be selling a better one for £14 from the 17th if you can eke it out until then, or you can eBay an alternative.

The other thing I'd suggest is getting a 12V solar charger. Again, look for about 500mA, which will also come in cheaper. I leave one plugged in to my bike all the time (in a clear map pocket on top of my tank bag) as lead-acids want to be kept fully charged all the time.

I still stand by that!

Granted, if you're leaving a bike parked up for weeks at a time (that has alarms etc) then a smart charger is definitely a good investment.

What reading will the multimeter give confirming the battery is knackered and ready for the bin?

My knackered battery shows 12.7V

My awesome motobatt shows 12.6V

You want to put it on and check the volts, hit the starter button and watch it drop. If it gets below 12.something, throw it and get a new one.

I just phoned the dealer I bought the bike from he quoted me £65 is he taking the piss?

Me: Are they cheaper on Ebay?

Him: Well they are but it's a big battery to start with.

Me: What do you mean?

Him: It's a 12Volt YTX 12.

Me: kthxbye.

Is this correct?

You can pick one of those up from Halfords for less money.

I use an Optimate 4, and switch it weekly between my two bikes. My mate uses the charger in the first Halfords link and it's fine.

Although I'd be inclined to order a Motobatt / gel battery.
