HDD repair

I'm after a tool to repair bad sectors on the sata HDD in my laptop, must be bootable from a USB stick.

I have a W7 installer on a USB stick, used that to boot to Dos, tried to reformat the drive but it quits after about 10% of the format due to bad sectors. I believe the bad sectors are preventing me from installing W7 to the drive. It's a relatively new drive (< 6 months old), so I would like to try to repair it first before I replace it.

Any ideas/suggestions/recommendations??

Most drives come with a 3 year warranty, I'd just get it replaced.

Download Ultimate Boot CD and you can use it to fix the HDD or to break it even more than it currently is.

Once you've finished breaking it, send it back and get a replacement one.

Pretty much what has been said.... but you would be able to recover most of the files on there, it might take a couple of days to do so with the bad sectors.

Past experience, I've had a couple of drives with the same problem as you... and no amount of software or repairs could get windows to install and run... even when I did get 7 installed, it would get to the windows screen then just hang (waited 9 hours to see if it would go any further.. but it wouldn't)

get it replaced if there's that many bad sectors, as far as i'm aware bad sectors can't actually be repaired, when it says repairing it's actually making a note of where they are to avoid attempting writing data to them in the future.

mhdd or hdat2 are decent software that runs from usb (bootable dos formatted usb) both can low level erase but from memory only hdat2 allows for scan/repair bad sectors, I have used hdsentinal and hdderase in the past with varying degrees of success.

Most recovery software can only recover "soft" bad sectors those that as marked as bad by mistake thanks to power outages or badcable/shocks etc.

you can edit drive parameters too like spindle speed and power use aam/apm and also turn off/on smart monitoring and other features like security or rerun smart internal tests after a low level format.

You can try some of the free hdd recovery software online that claim to rejuvenate hdd's but they rarely work, and can sometimes leave a drive in a worse state that it was thanks to reallocated sector count going haywire.

For formatting /blanking drives from within windows I use HDDLLF.4.25.exe

I rely on Hiren's BootCD every day in my job. one of the HDD testing/recovery tools on there has a very good success rate for me.

but if theres nothing of value to recover just get it replaced under warranty.
