£1000 - £1500 on a TDM 850 or Deauville for the commute, and the rest on an older Blade or supermoto?

£1500 supermoto. Fun as fuck.

£1500-£2000 commuter as said TDM or something dreary like a dullville.

Or, best allround bike... 05 Blade. Know of one for £3.5k Thumbs Up

Never owned/ridden one, but a friend is selling his 2003 sv1000 (I think the price range is £2,300 - can find out if interested?)

As other people have said, sports bike will be best - definately best for commuting, and depending on tastes the best for fun.

I love my Sprint to bits for same purposes as you, but you'd struggle for less than 4k.

Someone suggested an SV1000, i reckon that'd be spot on for you.

Except its on similar lines to the Aprilia Falco.

Gay 1 litre twins.

The real 1 litre twins are not road bikes Laughing I'd definitely think a CBR1000RR would eat miles, tyres and make you smile far more than anything else.

I can probably get it for £3000 if I barter...

What about a nice Yamaha FZ1S?

EDIT - not recommending that particular bike, just an example...

keep zzr600 for commute and general abuse and get a second bike for fun. It's what I did. Saves money on fuel and tyres.

I did a similar commute for 6 months in 2008. Wouldn't want to do it on a proper sports bike at all.

Id suggest something sports router but to the touring side of that. Also that works out to 20,000 miles a year without fun riding on top. £3,500 is a lot of month to spend on something that at best has 4 years to live...

I like the idea of a big single for a fun road bike.

BMW F650 maybe ?

I dont know a great deal about singles to be fair, but id like one as a road bike.

I've got a VFR800, VTEC jobby. Great bike, does nothing badly, and perfect for covering large distances without fuss. Not exciting though; think 2-wheeled Ford Mondeo... I had to get a 2nd bike eventually! A Blackbird may be a better option if you're strictly restricted to 1 machine.

TDM if you are 5'10+ go for the 900 the 850 burns oil.

I think it is plenty capable for Hooning personally, Adjustable Suspension and R1 brakes. Thumbs Up

Doesn't look like a bad deal.

30k is nothing for these, mine hasn't been ridden gently and is at 60k or so with no Major issues. Many on the forums have gone onto over 100k, and I met a courier with one on 286k about a year ago, I still see the bike around must be on more now. He said nothing major had gone wrong with it.

My Shock needed a rebuild after 50k miles, (I uprated it) other than that the coils going (known problem if ridding in all weathers can be prevented by protecting them). I had a issue where my Clutch plates broke but I put that down to EBC plates being naff and me doing shit wheelies through London at any opportunity. Brakes are great and with a scotoiller I get 30k to a chain ish.

I agree. I've done similar commutes but I think it depends on the criteria being set. I'm primarily a commuter myself and I had a few criteria:

1. Tank Range. You'd be surprised how filling up every day gets boring.
2. Comfort.
3. Must be able to carry stuff.
4. Something where I will keep the speed down.
5. Durable
6. Squeezable through gaps.
7. Vision.
8. Nothing too tall (height issues...)

I went for a CB1300. 21 litre tank range, can ride it all day (I have a load of metal in my leg), big old top box on the back. Manufactured in Japan so lasts longer than you'd think and I can squeeze through gaps although have to be more careful than on, say a Ninja 636. Also, can see further than on a sportsbike due to riding position.

A CBR6 is a fantastic commuting tool as well. As an aside, I kill bikes and have killed loads of them so durability is critical, especially on an all-year-round commute.

Tank range has driven me nuts in the past. Nothing more irritating than filling up all the time so no Supermotos etc... for me. Had a ZXR750 back in the day and ran out of petrol after 70 miles in one trip.

It would to me obviously depend on the type or riding, roads used and distances and speeds to decide on what bike to buy for an 80mile daily commute.

I do like small bikes, but when you look at all year round use in freezing weather, you do need a decent capacity electrical system and as good lights as possible. My old ZX6 J1 had 2x H4 halogen lights, and I upgraded to Phillips extreme Vision bulbs, that made them even better. They must have drawn a fair few amps, as the idle would always drop and you could feel the load on the alternator when switching them on. for an all round bike and fast commutes on major dual lane roads, and motorways, the 6R would have been as good as anything I guess.

I'm the kind of person however that always thinks you need a small light and cheap to run bike for commuting, so much so that I could easily end up with a machine that's not that capable for certain situations.

At the other end of the scale, a litre sportsbike or a Blackbird as a daily ride to work bike in all weather's seems quite unhinged to me. Especially in slidy greasy cold wet conditions. I'd hate to be riding a 160bhp bike on a very cold greasy wet winter's night home from work and worrying about either end letting go, or spinning up the rear wheel when you don't want it to, or even just throwing it up the road, and thinking how much expensive plastic's, exhausts, and engine cases damage will be done.

I can't say I've ever worried about what would happen to my old CG125 if Id chucked that up the road, and repair costs would be pretty simple and basic most times compared to re-building one side of a Blackbird and making it look nice again.

I'm sure you can all weather commute on one though, I see a bloke ride past me on the way home on a ZZR1400 quite often, and it looks like he uses the bike for everything: shopping, carrying DIY products home, and it get's plastered in crap. I just always think poor bloke, maybe his wife's got the car and he is forced to ride that bike to work and back in all weathers, because he can't get a second bike or something.

Yes because that's the main reason you wouldn't use a 125 for an 80 mile commute. Laughing
