So i'm upgrading my macbook pro(15" early 2011 version) with a second hdd, my plan is to use a kit to remove the optical drive to an external usb unit, put an ssd into the original hdd slot and put the standard hard drive into the optical drive bay.

This is the kit i'm going to be using.... https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005M234MM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

Now the question I have here is would it be worth shelling out the extra 50 quid or so for this hdd.... https://www.amazon.co.uk/OCZ-VTX4-25SAT3-512G-Vertex-III-6Gb-Internal/dp/B007RARIF6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357196615&sr=8-1

over for example https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Series-500GB-Solid-State/dp/B009LI7CEE/ref=sr_1_5?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1357196976&sr=1-5 this samsung chap?

I know the read and write speeds are different and obviously the faster the better but 300 quid on a hdd is plenty and i'm not convinced spending even more is necessary.

The main reason for the upgrade is that I find the standard hdd too slow when trying to use finalcut pro or similar applications.

Cheers for any help guys.

What speed drive do you have in there currently. Sure they are shipped with 5400s.

Just swap it for a 7200. Mine runs perfectly and is a far bit older than yours.

Yeah it's a 5400rpm. Biggest flaw with the laptop in my opinion. I quite fancy a ssd anyway, the benefits seem worth it for applications atleast. i'd heard that the unibody macbook pro's were having issues with overheating hence the lower rpm hdd's? Mighta just been a rumour though....if it's not the case I may do as you suggest. Cheers!

A standard 500 GB WD 7200rpm drive works perfectly.

Doesn't really get that warm..

I have 2 in my macbook pro.

a OCZ Vertex 3 128 and a Samsung 830 256.

The sammys have come down in price big time.

It was mentioned to just get a 7200rpm drive but a HDD will never hold a candle to an SSD.

1 "bounce" from any app and its open including Logic pro on my MBP.

Invest in as big a sata 3 SSD you can get, you wont regret it.

You could also look at the seagate momentus drives. Been reading good things about those and they have much higher sizes available.

I think i'm going to go for the 512gig vertex 4....Might look at upgrading the second hdd to a 7200 in the future though, but for now I have about 6tb's of external storage so aint too bothered.

Got one of these in mine.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SVP200S3-480G-Kingston-SSDNow-V-200-/400363377594?pt=UK_Computing_HardDrives_RL&hash=item5d378453ba

Didn't pay that price for it though.

Oh and anything over 200Mb+ read write is a decent drive but again get Sata 3 (6GBs) if your mac supports it. It is backwards compatible however so dont feel you cant buy one if your mac does not have a 6GBs port.

Also if you are going to install bootcamp and have 2 drives (I left my 750gb in for a while before I changed it out also). MAKE SURE you install bootcamp while the DVD drive is installed in the unit. You cannot install bootcamp with the internal drive out Apple disabled this "feature".

If you download a lot I would say get a good sized USB drive and use that for your downloads / extractions. An SSD has a long life but you may as well keep uneeded writes off it.

And make sure it has built in garbage collection or trim. The last I checked OSX didnt support that but dont quote me on that.

The vertex 4 has jumped in price, cheapest I can find it is 350....the samsung I can get for 270, not sure how much i'll need 500+ mb/s write over 330+ mb/s write...I can't see it being too much of a difference. and would mean I could upgrade to 16 gig of ram at the same time....choices choices.

Running a samsung 840 pro here. It's the 128gb model which is a little bit slower than the rest but i still get a real world 490mb/s read speed.

Yeah the samsungs seem really good value...I think i'm just gonna bite the bullet and buy one in the morning, now the only decision I need to make is corsair or crucial for my new ram....I reckon i'll probably go with corsair.

Keep in mind that there is a big different between the 840 and the 840 pro.

Yeah if I was gonna shell out the extra for a pro i'd be aswell just getting the vertex 4.... still though the 560mb/s read 330mb/s write should be plenty for me.
