I spent a couple weeks trying to find decent information on this, in the end I gave up, everything I read seemed to contradict the thing I read before it.

Would you have to wear a helmet on quad or tricycle after the 19th? Currently you do not. Was wondering.

Isn't a trike in the same class as a Reliant Robin, so if you had a car license it'd cover it?

The new licensing directive only affects those who pass their driving/riding tests after the enforcement date. It does not change any existing licenses.

So i/we lose out on entitlements then?

I don't know where you get that idea. Your entitlements are your entitlements.

I don't (for example) have a class C and D license, whereas someone who took their car test two years before I did would have a class C and class D. I'm not bitter, its just the law at the time of my test.

Some sources I've read from have said that all bike licence holders will gain the entitlements, in my opinion it would be illogical for new 16 year olds to be able to drive 'micro' cars on nothing but a moped licence, but keep us full licence holders unable to even drive a quad or trike.

Full motorcycle licence gives us a full moped licence automatically anyway?

Yeah, but the point is that there is uncertainty about whether only people sitting the test after the new rules come into force will get the new entitlements, or whether we all will.

Seems all you need it a full car license. However if you don't have a car license then it'll be down to what bike test you passed (after 19th)

No you will not be able to ride a quad, you will have access to a trike as they now in the A group, quads are still category B1, the only exception is quads with 50cc engines and capable of no more than 45kph, these fall into category AM and yes you can ride one.

When it comes to quads:

"To drive a quad bike on the road you need to have a full car licence or a category B1 licence if it was issued before January 1997."

The only exception to this is:

"Category AM: Light quadricycles (weighing under 350 kg, top speed 45 km/h)"

This is under the 3DLD. As far as I know there has been no change to quads under the 3DLD. The only thing I can find is that when you get your new licence if you already have a B1 entitlement but no "A" entitlement then your licence will show both B1 and A but the A will have a "Limited to tricycles" code on it since B1 is both quad and tricycle but under the new licencing trikes come under A instead from what I can see.

Anyway, from what I see:

If you have these combinations BEFORE January 19th, you can do/ride the following:

A: Come Jan 19th you can ride full power motorcycles and tricycles plus you get the "AM" entitlement meaning you can ride quadricycles not exceeding 350kg and a top speed not more than 28mph.

B1: Come Jan 19th you can ride quadricycles of any power and trikes of any power however when you renew your licence your entitlement will change from just B1 to B1 plus A with a "Tricycles Only" code next to the A entitlement. If you were to pass your motorcycle test after this, the "Tricycles Only" code would disappear. You HAVE to have B1 on your licence now and after Jan 19th to ride a quad weighing more than 350kg and with a top speed of more than 28mph.

B1 and A: Come Jan 19th you can ride motorcycles of any power, quadricycles of any power and trikes of any power. When you renew your licence to get the new style licence nothing will change.

I must stress also, that from what I understand from the Government website is that if you have an entitlement already, it is NOT affected. For example, as it currently stands if you have the B1 entitlement you can ride quads/trikes of any power. However, if you get a B1 entitlement AFTER January 19th then you can only ride quads as the entitlement for trikes comes under the A entitlement for full-power tricycles and A1 for tricycles not exceeding 15kW (20bhp) of power.

If you already have the related entitlements, you can chill out, it makes zero difference to existing entitlements. But OP, if you only have an A Licence you cannot ride a quad which exceeds 350kg in weight and a top speed of 28mph. If you want to ride a quad, you need to take B/B1 test.

This is just my interpretation, if I am wrong please correct me and I will edit the post.

Cheers! Thumbs Up.
