I am curious how this works.

Was a member of a forum years ago about 2009.

Made a joke which they took the wrong way the owner was always an ass.

They told me I was unwelcome. Asked politely to leave.

They kept my account active but crippled. Any topic or anything mentioning my name the poster was banned in a similar way.

2013 I can't even remember my login details. So make another account and post a couple of messages not saying who I am but to get the contact details of somebody I knew from there.

On my Toshiba and Acer it was fine.

But I then logged on using my old not been reformatted since 2007 Dell.

Which resulted in an instant ban though I do regularly delete cookies and block almost everything on this machine.

My question is how did they know it was me by PC alone? As I've moved home twice so my ISP and IP are different.

Its rather disturbing that they are injecting stuff laying dormant on my PC for years? Shocked

My first guess would have been your MAC address... although I'm not sure if that changes... or if they are even logged. You would be surprised how much info is retreived by a website on traffic

MAC address doesn't get communicated outside of the local tcp/ip area. My guess would be a simple tracking cookie deposited all those years ago with an infinite lifespan.

Clearly not the kind of community you really want to be a part of though...

Sneaky buggers.... I always thought cookies expired but I'm not an computery bod. I wonder how it got past my cookie cleaning every now and again. But you're right I don't want to associate with them anymore. Its gone a bit fundie tbh, you will hold this view and this view alone.

on our site we use a number of ways to track banned members and its cookie based
it may not even have the site name on the cookie, possibly just an IP address
as said you can't see MAC addresses over the web so you can't track that way
