Haynes manuals are good - however, don't expect the pictures shown to relate to what you're doing.

Generally, if you read it properly (i.e. not the first word and then have at it) you'll be fine.

Don't buy at that full price though.

Used to be buy a used one and check for greasy fingerprints - tells you what went wrong on the previous owners! - but as this covers more than one model, probably not relevant.

Always worth having one, if you can get it cheaper.

Hayne Manuals are awesome. not perfect but far better than any manual that comes with any bike. Buy it but hit ebay or amazon for it Smile

As above. It's a bit of a pisser when the nice shiney bit in the photo bears no relation to the grubby pile of poo in your hand (moral is clean your bke properly before working on it Laughing ) but on the whole they are the best accessory you will ever buy for your bike.

There are a few other makes, Clymer manuals are superb. Yankee though. I had them for my Goldwings but they are expensive.

Even more expensive are manufacturers manuals but although good, these are designed for mechanics not DIY and if you aren't an experienced spanner monkey they can be confusing.

I'm waffling into a Tef mode here.

Get a Haynes for your bike, or the nearest bike to it. I had a Haynes scooter manual when my daughter had her scooter. It was good enough for the basics and I expect the generic chinese one will be as well.

I've got this Haynes manual, because of the JS125.

Every vehicle I've owned, the first thing I've bought is a Haynes manual. Trouble is, I don't always interpret them correctly (that's code for, I'm a bit thick).

The other problem, my exact model is not technically covered, it's more of a rip-off of a YBR than a CG/GN-125, which they seem to cover. So the images match even less to my bike, not always easy to translate it.
Also, the "see illustration 14.b" sometimes doesn't appear to exist.

Having said that. After a cup of tea, packet of Garibaldi biscuits and radio, it's the first thing I take out to the garage. Wouldn't look at any job without having read the Haynes section a few times.

A basic service is what £50-£80, the book soon pays for itself.......not to mention help from forums Smile

Also, if you want, let me know the bike you have and I can see if its on the list on the back of the book.

It's not essential to have the exact model referenced, as it talks a bit more in general terms than your average Haynes.

The old Haynes manuals were brilliant - however the one I have for my Hornet is terrible. Says it's in full colour when in fact it isn't and its not very clear at all

The only manufacturer workshop manual I have is for my SH300, and to be frank it is far better than Haynes in almost every way. Much clearer photos, more pages with less crowded information, more detailed steps, the diagrams are excellent and clearly based off the CAD model used in originally designing the thing.

The downside is that it refers to techniques using various Honda workshop tools that would cost many 1000s to buy, if you wanted to have everything needed to do everything described in the manual.

What you get in the Haynes manuals is more improvised techniques and tips and tricks for getting things done using a less fully equipped garage.

Given the freedom, I prefer to have both.
