I'll start.

I thought my XR125 was overheating. Little did I know it was an air-cooled engine, and leaving it in the driveway running would cause it to heat up.

I then grabbed a bucket of water and chucked it all over the engine. Whilst it was hot. And running.

Took it to the dealer and told them the problem. The mechanic looked at me with a serious "what the fu**" face, but was a champ and looked over it anyway (out of my view, he was probably screaming with laughter).

Luckily didn't cause any damage, and learnt a few weeks later what a twat I was.

As I pulled out on to the road for my first CBT, nearly just went straight over the road into a grassy ditch.
I thought a 50cc scooter was really powerful for those few seconds.

Bought cheap gear. 4 helmets before I bought a Shoei. 2 or 3 pairs of cheap boots before getting Alpine Stars, Same with my Gloves and my textiles. All of the cheap stuff were rubbish.

Some of my other regrets again revolve around gear, I bought motorcycle specific waterproofing all which proved to be rubbish. Now I only use 2 sizes up breathable water proof walking gear that I put over my leathers.

overtightened oil drain bolt after an oil change, and dripped oil everywhere.

different incident, ignored warning signs, and bike engine seized as I was riding it, back wheel locked up and skidded to a halt

tried to do a low speed turn in the road on a hill, spent ages hopping about on one leg trying not to drop bike

would turn fuel tap off at petrol station and forget to turn it back on when I rode off, then come to a halt a few hundred yards later

Spent half an hour trying to start bike including trying to bump start, wondered why it was starting with the choke on, but not normally.

Anyway, needed to put fuel tap on reserve Razz

Went round a corner that was too tight, ending up mounting the curb on the only flat bit of curve for a good 300m, rode up the pavement a bit, straightened up, did a wee jump off the curb back on to the road. Could have been lethal, but I was fucking buzzin' haha Very Happy I definately recommend learning on a shit old bike you don't care about Razz

Exactly this for me too. Astars boots, Arai lid, Triumph/Astars gloves. Standard leather jacket and draggin jeans, then some builder's hi vis waterproofs for bad weather.

Anyhoooo, I wasnt used to the choke so I nearly called the AA. Would have been less embarrassing if I didnt have a few mates with me in the middle of town. And yes, the good old drop on the side, what a heavy fucker!

Took my CBR125 out in thick, lumpy snow & ice when there was a car I could have taken a lift in going to the same destination a few minutes later. Cause it's only a little ice... Rolling Eyes

Came off twice in a mile.

Anyone know Weston super mare?

I had a Honda P50 and a mate had a Puch Maxi. We decided to drive on the sands the length of the beach with the tide coming in. Trouble was when we got to the Tropicana (open air pool in those days) the tide was up past the bottom of the outer wall.

We still tried to drive round it through the sea, about 2 feet deep. We didn't make it. The bikes didn't take to being covered with sea water too well. My P50 never went anywhere again Crying or Very sad

We made it about halfway along that wall before having to wade/swim for it!

Hmm where to start well for my first year...

I crashed on cbt (carpark and neutral on a corner wearing jeans no damage to me), crashed on a bottle crisp packet in a car park. Broke a rocker braking from 60 -0 in about 50 meters without changing down the gears. Crashed again and then crashed and somehow caused frame damage broke the lock stop. Blew a gasket which meant I lost all the oil in the bike (didn't realize) kept riding and seized the engine.

Got a new bike and crashed on my very first ride (search smiler stacks it).

Think they are all the stupid things that I did in my first year of riding, unless I've forgotten something surely someone will remind me of something.

Didn't check basic things, tyres were flat as a fart on my DTR for weeks before I wondered why I was sliding about the road. Skill wise I didn't pay enough attention, nearly went into the back of a massive truck once, suppose that helped when it came to mod 1 training Razz I was just happy to be on 2 wheels and having fun learning the basics.

Deciding I was going out on my bike on the first day I was legal, despite it being (as records would later show) the snowiest month of the 20th century.

Woke up on the morning of my 16th birthday, only to discover that 30cms of snow had fallen overnight, on top of the severe frost that was already there.

It started snowing again as I was leaving and I got less than a mile, before I needed to slow down to make way for an oncoming lorry, touched the back brake on sheet ice and went down like a sack of spuds.

Took me 10 minutes to pick the bike up, but I struggled on to my destination 5 miles away, arriving soaking wet, frozen stiff and looking like I was auditioning for the lead role in The Snowman.

I made a post about it a few years back, on my RS125.
Sun was shining, nice day to take bike out, started bike got suited and booted, chucked everything under my seat, riding down the road....this doesn't feel right, like a shock had collapsed or something got a bit a further up the road, not right, get off have a look....laugh at myself, call myself a twat.... You see in my haste to get out on the bike I neglected to put the seat back on, even I have to admit that was stupid.

Think I had only just got the bike back from being fixed, and was first hot day so raring to get out, other than that, not really done anything else.

Thought bike maintenance would be fun. Just got in from the garage after swearing at the goddamn wheel bearings that refuse to budge after 2 hours of patient hammering. Need a bearing puller. Seems these days every new job I attempt on the bike requires a new more expensive tool!

Other than that, didn't realise chains need tightening when I was on my 125. Cue revving off at the lights and almost immediately coming to an abrupt stop. Chain had come off. Could have been much worse.
