Hmmm do I or do I not attempt to ride to college in the snow, apparently the main roads around where I live are clear, but I'm unsure whether to risk it or treat myself to a day off.

I don't want to get to college and then it snows more.

It's easy mmmkay, reminds me of my CBT Razz

My ignition was frozen up in the morning and refroze by the time I made it to work, my thumb was nearly frost bitten!

Worst part is my visor, can't handle the silly cold and steams up, never had a problem with it till it got this cold Confused

I've been going to and from work in this weather on the ninja and as long as you understand the conditions you should be ok. The side streets are dangerous but as long as you take your time, keep your feet out in case the front tucks and no sudden jerks of the throttle then you'll be ok. Once you get out onto the main roads dont think your home and dry. Last night i was coming home along a main road and at a few places i had the rear spin up at about 45mph. Just be over cautious in weather like this.

- Wrap up warm. This morning it, with wind chill, equated to -16C. The last thing you want to do is lose your concentration because your fingers are numb.

-Side streets. Keep your feet down for stability and assurance.

-Try to keep your bike as upright as possible even when turning corners.

-Take your time. Ignore the drivers behind you. If anything, they'll be more understanding.

People at work think i'm mad for riding a bike in this weather but if you concentrate and you know what to look out for then the risk is lower. Something alot of car drivers don't do, hence the crashes every 10 mins Laughing

Took me four hours to get home from work last night (Ipswich>Norwich) in my van. It snowed so heavily that the grit was completely useless. Even the city centre and main A roads were sheet ice. It was actually worse then the 2010 snow.
Haven't been out today but it was -12 overnight so I wouldn't fancy riding a motorbike in it, might take the mountain bike over to the woods for a play though Razz

Personally going keep the bike off the road for a whilst we have this weather. The road that I live on is extremely slippery just seen a Mitsubishi shogun having problems coming up the road. Added to that it hasn't been gritted not worth the risk IMHO.

Rather icy west of London. Main roads were fine. Hit the side roads and bike wanted too go sideways. Feet down and tripod'ed up the road too work Mr. Green

Can you take a push bike too college? You will be warmer pedalling and less damage if you fall over Smile

I ride in the winter wherever I can. I've done some winter skills courses too, though really it's just a skills course with a chat about weather. The last one I did was on the hottest October day in record, and I fell off my bike cos it overheated and the biting point of the clutch changed. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. Embarassed

I take a lock with me, prepared to abandon bike at destination and make alternative arrangements if need be, check weather forecasts, try to avoid riding in darkness, stick to bus routes. I shovel snow outside my own house asap, not that I'd ride in snow, but my road isn't gritted, and I want rid of it when I set off next day, later in week. I grit 3 houses either side to maximise parking up easiness.

Getting out of my road, or back in is even worse, once I'm at the end of the road it is fine. I take it easy. Didn't exceeed 50mph on the A1 yesterday hardly, cut the windchill down, allowed me more time to spot hazards. Ice flying off the roofs of other vehicles was the most hazard.

I don't set off in proper snow, I just would't do it. Light flurries I might nip to the shops and back and I do carry on riding if I am caught out in snow, I've done it a few times.

But, like proper full on winter conditions I wouldn't ride in.

Next time I'll go out is after it rains again - cos of the current snow the roads have LOADS of salt on 'em. Needs a decent couple of days downpour to wash it all away.

I'm missing it, but balls to it. I can wait.

If I had a garage I'd buy a quad bike, but I don't, and it would be stolen.

I saw someone in some weird buggy thing yesterday, car, with an open cage, no windshield, single seater, driver had full on bike gear on. Laughing Not quite the same, but looked kinda crazy fun anyway.

My college is about 10 miles away so don't want to ride my bmx there haha, I left it in the end, I'll wait for all the salt and other crap to go away I think.

This definitely. Last night coming back from Oxford I had a guy on my tail for about ten minutes. He tried to cut me off/knock me off on a roundabout and beeped his horn and shouted at me. He indicated for me to pull over further up so I pulled up next to him and he shouted at me for a bit.

But I didn't hear a word he said, because underneath my IRA issue balaclava One Direction - Beautiful was playing at full blast. So I just listened and stared and when he was done shook his hand and went on my way.

Uhh.....the moral of the story is, loss of concentration/One Direction can kill you...

Probably shouldn't have told you I've got that on my ipod

We're fine in leicester, it's not great but I prefer this to heavy downpours any day, at least I can see

And by see I mean have my visor up with a balaclava covering half my face because my visor can't handle the freezing cold and just fogs else

My ignition is frozen after every ride though, annoying, pouring boiling water down it just refreezes in the lock and goofs it, tried boiling SALT water this time Thumbs Up

Been there seen it done it, got the scratches. I won't bother now, if the snow is heavy it is quicker for me to get the train anyway. If the main roads are fine then Maybe if not, no.

I’ve been riding this week, but I’m lucky that there’s not much ice on my commute this time. It’s just been cold. While the roads are largely dry I’ll use the bike regardless of how cold it gets, but as soon as there’s snow or ice I quit…

…so that looks like being Friday then. Smile The weatherman’s predicting more snow. I kind of hope it does snow as I have Friday off work and want to get the kids out on the sledge.
