Is anyone else interested in this? I find it quite interesting as its such a difficult race.

A French racer Thomas Bourgin has died today after a head on crash with a police car Sad

Updates on the stages are available here:

No worries. It's not cheap to enter - even with sponsorship Patsy Quick spent about £150k of her own money one year Shocked

He's fifth overall at the moment, and his arch rival is not competing this year due to a dislocated shoulder.

Sad news when any racer dies. I actually had heard of this guy as well. It's a shame, but I spose he at least went doing something he enjoyed.

I do like the Dakar - even bought a Dakar Ps2 game, it's shit and fecking difficult, but a laugh at the same time lol.

also top of my bucket list. Seems difficult for 'amateurs' to enter to me, need a lot of money but technically anyone can enter.

Im thinking that one day Ill save up 20 odd grand, get together with a few likeminded people, build some bikes hire a container and go have a stab at it, even if we're not competetive. just have to do it, it seems like on of the greatest personal achievements possible. I just want to be the guy on the bike in all the videos of dakar on youtube

Apparently it only takes me a couple of pints until I can't read a score card properly Whistle

25 grand today, if you're shoestringing it is possible. Entry fee is 10 grand sterling, buying the license is 600 quid and used Dakar bikes (5+ years) go for £6k - £7kish GBP. Transport is the next biggie at £3k GBP and then spares, lodging, insurance, sundries etc... I reckon you could get away with for 5 - 6 grand.

Before my ex-wife divorced me, I was looking at this myself but can't do it now because she's cleaned me out. However, if you talk with the guys who have shoestringed it, they'll tell you it nearly killed them. Far better to do it in a pair as a minimum if you can find some other SoB crazy enough to want to ride with you.

The best alternative for £40k sterling will get you a supported Dakar attempt meaning hooking you up with other riders, a purpose built bike, spares, support team etc... Rally Management Services or similar will build a bike and sort you out.

You could do the Baja1000 (or 500). It's not in the same league, but a damn site cheaper.

Luv the Dakar and all it stands for. However, as with most things, big money has adverse effects on the event which are not so great, but bitter+sweet.

The other thing to consider is that unless you are a highly skilled rider the chance of ever finishing the rally is pretty slim!

Even ex Womens European Enduro champion Patsy Quick failed to finish most years she entered and one year had to have her spleen removed after a life threatening off Sick

I think only about half of the bike entries finish the race but that is including the pro factory supported riders as well.

having 50k or whatever to enter is all very well but from what I understand there is still a tough selection process where you need to detail and submit evidence of training, competition licence, recent experience in motorcycling competition and results. Even then you aren't guaranteed a place.

I was following the tread on adv rider.com about the Dakar but its up to over 600 pages in a couple of weeks and I haven't got that much time to invest in it Smile So am just watching the Eurosport coverage now.

RIP to the french guy.

Could've changed but when I looked at it, it was unnecessary.

Otherwise, the FIM license costs £600, then the rider has to write about their training, display evidence they have a vehicle etc..., stump up all the cash and they're in.

It could've changed as my info is years out of date.

However, don't listen to me, go to the Dakar rally entry page which lists the current requirements.

Here's the latest update:

Quote:
Dakar: BREAKING NEWS: The first riders have just reached the neutralised section in the middle of today's huge stage. Cyril Despres is still out front at the moment.

But it's bad news for rally leader, David Casteu. The smiley Frenchman and his Yamaha hit a cow during towards the end of the first half of the special. The medical team have strapped up his shoulder after the incident and David hopes to be able to ride through the pain.

We'll keep you updated on his progress.

More news from stage 11:

Quote:
Kurt Caselli has taken victory on Stage 11. After securing his first Dakar day win on Stage 7, the American KTM rider has now backed it up with today’s result, proving to everyone just how adaptable he is.

Today’s 476km stage to Fiambala saw the riders re-enter the dunes, something which seemes to suit Caselli’s Baja style.

But getting back into the sandy stuff caused navigational problems for some. Ivan Jakes and Joan Barreda both lost precious minutes due to heading in the wrong direction.

It was Portugal’s Helder Rodrigues who lead the way through most of the stage, navigation has always been a strong point for the experienced Honda rider. But unfortunately he suffered with mechanical problems and slipped down to 29th.

Cyril Despres and Francisco Lopez both stayed close to Caselli for the majority of the stage. Despres slipped to 3rd after Husqvarna’s Paulo Goncalves beat him by less than 2 minutes. And unlucky Lopez lost time for an as yet unknown reason and dropped down to 5th on stage.

Joan Barreda completed the stage in 6th, just ahead of his team-mate Alessandro Botturi but the young Spaniard sustained a shoulder injury today and is said to be in a lot of pain. We can only hope this won’t be the end of the road for Barreda.

KTM’s Juan Pedrero had another good day, bringing it home in 4th position. And Sherco’s Alain Duclos snuck back into the Top 10 with 9th place.
