KTM/Despres in the lead, again? They might have to implement another rule change next year ____________________ '11 CBF1000A, '99 C90, '98 CB500

Im thinking that one day Ill save up 20 odd grand, get together with a few likeminded people, build some bikes hire a container and go have a stab at it |
25 grand today, if you're shoestringing it is possible. Entry fee is 10 grand sterling, buying the license is 600 quid and used Dakar bikes (5+ years) go for £6k - £7kish GBP. Transport is the next biggie at £3k GBP and then spares, lodging, insurance, sundries etc... I reckon you could get away with for 5 - 6 grand.
Before my ex-wife divorced me, I was looking at this myself but can't do it now because she's cleaned me out. However, if you talk with the guys who have shoestringed it, they'll tell you it nearly killed them. Far better to do it in a pair as a minimum if you can find some other SoB crazy enough to want to ride with you.
The best alternative for £40k sterling will get you a supported Dakar attempt meaning hooking you up with other riders, a purpose built bike, spares, support team etc... Rally Management Services or similar will build a bike and sort you out. ____________________ FZR400 (blown engine), ZXR750 (blown engine), ZX6R (accident), CBR600 which had engine issues after which I learned to change gear..., CBR900, CBR924 (stolen), CB600, CB1300 (everything blew up), BMW K1300GT (written off, hit from rear while stationary), Bandit 1250 for a couple of months, Triumph Sprint ST 1050 (nicked) and somewhere in there, I wrote off a Ducati 748 at Cadwell. |

The other thing to consider is that unless you are a highly skilled rider the chance of ever finishing the rally is pretty slim!
Even ex Womens European Enduro champion Patsy Quick failed to finish most years she entered and one year had to have her spleen removed after a life threatening off ____________________ Motorcycle Touring Holidays in France: Ridelimousin

I think only about half of the bike entries finish the race but that is including the pro factory supported riders as well.
having 50k or whatever to enter is all very well but from what I understand there is still a tough selection process where you need to detail and submit evidence of training, competition licence, recent experience in motorcycling competition and results. Even then you aren't guaranteed a place.
I was following the tread on adv rider.com about the Dakar but its up to over 600 pages in a couple of weeks and I haven't got that much time to invest in it So am just watching the Eurosport coverage now.
RIP to the french guy. ____________________ Yamaha FZR400RR 3tj

Could've changed but when I looked at it, it was unnecessary.
Otherwise, the FIM license costs £600, then the rider has to write about their training, display evidence they have a vehicle etc..., stump up all the cash and they're in.
It could've changed as my info is years out of date.
However, don't listen to me, go to the Dakar rally entry page which lists the current requirements. |
