Hey,

So I've been reading up on the new law changes on Saturday. All I can say is this: What a pain in the hole.

That being said, I have a question.

I have a full car licence - if i take a CBT, can I ride up to a 125cc bike or am I limited to a 50cc hairdryer? I looked on https://www.bikelicence.co.uk/ and from what I gather there is now a test just to ride a 50cc bike if you want to progress to a 125, but it assumes you have no driving licence at all.

I know it's the millionth one but I'm confused!

You'll be able to ride a 125cc on L plates with a CBT. It's about the only thing that isn't changing! Thumbs Up

Ah right, is that because I've got a car licence?

If I ride a 125cc on a CBT i take it it's the whole "L plates no pillion" rule still?

Well it seems like a bit of an unregulated loophole to me and allows people to have fun and experiment on their own without being supervised

How does that fit in to modern Britain?

Not because of the full car licence, no. It's because you have the category A provisional on your driving licence, which is validated by the CBT. Provisional car drivers have the exact same rights.

(I'm assuming you have the category A provisional on your licence? There was a box to tick when you applied for your car provisional IIRC. Check the paper counterpart if you're not sure. Thumbs Up )

Bang on with your assumptions. 125cc (14.6bhp) max, no pillion, no motorways.

Ah, right, okay. I actually don't think I have a category A on my licence (I don't remember ticking it as the time I wasn't interested in learning to ride a bike, although that being said, I may have it). Will I have to send it off and get the entitlement added if not?

Basically I can pass my CBT and ride a 125 as I can now, correct?

If you don't have it, you'll need to send it off, yeah. No harm in checking first though - I've just been informed by my brother who is a few years younger than me that he didn't have to tick a box, and just got it automatically, so the form seems to have changed since I got mine!

With that A provisional entitlement and a CBT, you're good to ride a 125, yes.

Bike provisional and learning rules have changed so much over the years that you shouldn't assume anything until you've checked.

There's no reason to suppose that we'll lose soLo riding on 125s in the near future. Even if it were to be decided today, it'd take years for them to piss in the punch bowl.

Not quite that easy Laughing money is a problem although I was asking because I know I won't be sitting my test until after the law changes.

I will be doing it later this year, probably once the weather improves.
