Well it looks like this pair have passed their prime. Ripped when soaking wet with sweat and being pulled on.

https://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/hvandermerwe62/IMG-20130118-00789.jpg

When do you get new ones? when they have holes?

I have another set that the seam at the finger is coming loose and it has a small hole. A third set are relatively new, but when wet they stain my hands.

It looks like my gloves last about 30 000 km a pair, which is 1 year of riding. Crying or Very sad

Add another R800 to the anual cost of riding compared to caging Crying or Very sad

For me, motorcycle gloves are like shoes for some women. I can't stop myself shopping for them and have collected quite a few pairs, most of which I wear infrequently. I'm turning into the Imelda Marcos of motorcycle gloves...

I have one pair that I mostly wear. They have a small hole (a bit smaller than yours) in the palm of the right hand where I came off the bike at a good clip (30mph-ish) last year, about a week after I bought them.

I only spent 14 quid on the pair I bought back in August - and wrecked 'em about a month later by tearing the waterproof lining out. Still wear 'em though. Seams are coming undone in a couple of places too. But despite everything there haven't been many occasions when the cold got to me - and for that reason alone I've yet to replace 'em.

I had this idea of getting a XXXXL pair I saw offered for sale in a free brochure thing that came tucked inside one of the various bike mags I occasionally buy. Most brands only seem to make XXL at the biggest, but these went up 4 or 5 XL. Looked decent cos they were leather and had armoured knuckles, plus a decent lining. Think they were about 30 quid.

My plan was to then also purchase some silk liner gloves, PLUS some of those blue waterproof nitrile gloves (in XXL) like mechanics sometimes wear, to keep oil off their hands.

Those three layers were to be my grand winter glove system - not sure I would've actually been able to operate the controls with all that crap on, but still. That was my masterplan.

But because I haven't seemed to suffer with cold hands too much (either because I haven't been out on the coldest days due to a fear of ice, and because of the amount of salt on the roads), I never did get to actually test me ultra top secret special winter glove system. Not that this is very relevant to your good self, living as you do on the equator. Or near enough.

Here's an interesting glove system - but for bushcraft nutters, not bikers. Might be adaptable though:

Yeah but once the scabs go nice and crispy it will be like getting a hand job off a Norwegian whaler.

Don't try and tell me you're not tantalised by the prospect. Because I won't listen. NO - CAN'T HEAR YOU!!! *dances round thread with fingers in ears*

I know that feeling. I cant walk into full throttle without coming out a lot poorer. The same with a hardware store. It is an addiction.

I know when I go to buy another set of gloves I will walk out of there with other stuff, so best take a large cargo net so I dont buy another one Mr. Green

I don't generally buy anything until I really need them. I've still got my original pair of summer gloves that I bought in the 1990's. I also have the same leather jeans as I got back then too.

My leather jacket started leaking after my big crash in 1998, so I replaced with a textile jacket, that only got replaced about 2yrs ago because my mate gave me her old paddock jacket (that fits me better than the former).

Aha, Last time I went to buy anything was supposed to get a new skid lid and walked away with said skid lid, Alpinestar Boots that were an extra £279.99 and a set of Alpinestar gloves that I didn't need for £89.99

Morale of the story is I just shouldn't bother going shopping. Ever. Very Happy

About once a year, when the liner or exterior has holes.

I tend to wear one pair of gloves most of the time, a medium-padded pair with floating gore-tex liner, Hein Gericke X-trafit. The padding isn't enough on its own in this weather, but it's fine with muffs. The left glove has a built-in wiper which helps with clearing the visor of water and wet road grime without too many scratches.

They're not comfortable above 25 degrees, in which case I wear Halvarssons Dinos (not hugely comfortable on my hands) if I'll be exceeding 40mph, or black Hein Gericke Cruiser summer gloves if I'm only going around London - these are really thin and have loads of perforation, they're almost like not wearing gloves at all.

I've crashed in my last pair of X-trafit gloves maybe 3 times, only light surface scuffing. I crashed in the Halvarssons Dinos once, no marks at all (the brillo pad stuff on the side absorbed the abrasion).

So far, I go through a pair of gloves a year, the X-trafit gloves are my second pair, and I went through similar but different make waterproof light winter gloves before that. Somewhere around 20k miles per pair, average speed maybe 30mph considering a lot of mileage is in London with traffic lights etc.

I replace the gloves when the liner wears through; typically the fingertips develop holes. I have not worn any of my warm weather gloves long enough to need to replace them. Fingertips look thin on the cruiser gloves though.

Actually, if I buy something new, I get rid of something old. That's how it works in my world. Cool Thumbs Up

I've a pair of cheap oxford bone dry gloves I bought when I did my CBT, I still use them, only pair i've got and still not scraggley at all so will probably use them until they are, not massively great in the freezing cold though so I am tempted to buy a warmer pair but i'm a cheapskate

My main pair were bought in Oban after my cheapie first ones got wet through and became unwearable.
- that was in 1989! -
Quality lasts, although they are bulky waterproof ones so not worn in summer.

Just bought myself a new set of gloves. Alpinestars SP-X

https://www.revzilla.com/product_images/0034/6285/SP-X_GLOVE_BLK_detail.jpg

Blerry expensive. R1600, or over £100.

Even more than BMW gloves, and almost twice as much as Fox Bombers

When they've got holes in. My SP1s are battered and have a hole on a finger from multiple crashes but are good enough for occasional wear, ie when my GP+s are still too wet the next day.

That is why I try and keep at least 2 sets of gloves in good condition. a third is usually on its last legs and suitable for just odd short trips.

I haven't racked up many miles on my bike so haven't worn any gloves out, but why do they seem to get knackered so fast? I ski and have used this one set of gloves for 5 years now, they take a lot of abuse (falling, holding onto ski poles, carrying skis) yet they've kept their integrity and are still warm and dry. They were expensive, but evidently very worth it.

If I spent £100 on bike gloves, would they too have the same lifespan?

Not sure. If I get 30 000 km out of a set of gloves, for me that is 1 year. For most it may be several years.

Not sure if it is the dry climate, sweat, or the fact that the only gloves suitable here must be thin and lightweight with airflow, or they are far too hot. That leaves out thick full leather gloves and more exotic materials with mesh and carbon fibre.

In addition, a £100 pound glove here is probably far cheaper for you due to our huge import duties.

The Queen's Britanistan rupees are in far more demand than baboon faced SA Kwacha Mr. Green

I normally replace mine when one goes missing in the garage. I think the tool sprites wear them as hats during the winter.

you really must fire those darkie domestics. They steal everything you know. I lost a set of gloves once when I left darkie gardeners alone when I had to go off.

They dont ride bikes. I wonder what they did with them? Some darkie must be pushing a mower and digging up weeds with the most expensive gardening gloves around. Laughing
