I thought it was, if taxed it had to be insured
If untaxed it needs to be insured
If it is SORNed then you don't need to insure it.

So in other words you haven't taxed it or SORNed it, not sure whether or not you can tell them you sent the SORN off with regards to getting out of it

This happened to me in September 2012. I did nothing. Nothing happened.

If you 'forget'/ignore you will probably be OK, just don't repeat the mistake.

I had an old spitfire project that was kept in a garage.

It was sorn and I got a fine saying it needed to be insured. Apaz it has to be even if sorn.

I called them and politely said I will not insure a vehicle that I do not drive. If it is involved in an accident whilst parked up then clearly it is not my fault...

Didn't hear nothing more of it

Happened to me last year. Decided to ignore 3 letter until I got a 'You will be taken to court' so I phoned them saying I sent it off with the 2nd letter and they obviously didn't receive it so they took the fine down to £70 and took the last charges off it. I just paid it to get them off my back.

It doesn't have to be insured if registered SORN.
A SORN lasts 1 year unless you un-SORN.

It is not really very complexed-ish.

As to ignoring DVLA. It may well work and you will hear nothing more but you will NOT be able to re-tax, if you decide to later, until outstanding 'issues' are resolved.
This is purely because they are hawdin' the baw. As it were, so to speak.

If you happen to speak to DVLA again, tell them you SORN'd it - you got the form from the post office and sent it off to them when the vehicle was taken off the road.

They must've lost the form - their problem.

Thumbs Up

This thread made me paranoid and it turns out my RXS wasn't SORNed or Taxed after checking online. The mate who had it in his name for a while SORNed and I never received any letters to tell me this had expired when I got it back in my name or afterwards.

Anyway I've SORNed it online. Now I get to find out if the DVLA want to threaten me...for the few months it apparently wasn't in compliance with the law.

As Walloper said, completely wrong.

The rules for insuring vehicles are called ‘continuous insurance enforcement’. They mean that if you’re the registered keeper of a vehicle it must be insured or declared as off the road (SORN).

I believe it still has to be insured (laid-up insurance policy) even if SORN'd.
UNLESS it is kept in a locked garage.

Id be inclined to write to them informing them that this is, in fact the case.

No it doesn't. And many bike insurers will not do laid up policies any more.

I stand corrected, It's DVLA policy NOT law (as I've just found out.)

As for not being able to get laid-up policies. On what are you basing this?? Not many companies did them in the first place.

The way I understand it is this - it must be insured OR declared off-road (i.e. sorned). If it's not declared off-road, it's assumed that it may be ON road - and if it's therefore ON road, it MUST be insured.

If you have a vehicle and store it off road there is no need for it to be insured. More pertinently, there is no legal obligation to insure it. At least that's my understanding.

Why would you need to insure a car that's being stored on private property, that is not going on a public road? I can't really think of any reason why this would be necessary. The only thing I can think is if maybe you owned some large-ish piece of land on which you drove it, and had to insure against the possibility of a member of the public trespassing on your land and getting injured after you run them over. But really - that's *your* fault?!?!?

Perhaps the ones that did no longer do?

Anyway, wouldn't it come under home contents if it was in your garage? Not sure about if it was stored remotely.

I can't believe there is still confusion abound over this. It's really quite simple:

You have a vehicle (car/bike/motorhome/petrol engined wheelchair). This vehicle must either be declared off road (SORN) or 'taxed' (been issued with and 'displaying' a valid VED disc, even a free one).

If the vehicle is 'taxed' it is assumed to be on the road and must be insured. If SORN, then by definition it is off road and need not be insured.

My interpretation so far is OP obviously put his taxed bike in a barn and finished the insurance - saying you sent off the SORN form is useless in this case as it would have to be accompanied by the un-needed VED disc. If that's wrong and the 'tax' expired, then tell them you sent in the form.

If you are prepared to pay enough premium you could insure the space shuttle. Smile

I own 3 bikes that are currently SORN. Two of them are just being used as donors, but my classic bike is important to me. I cannot get laid up insurance for it.
