I almost got my knee down but I still don't know what I am doing wrong judjing by this pic can I lean the bike over more or should I push my knee out a bit more? it was the most fun I ever had on two wheels! I will be going to another trackday on the 12th of December, one really interesting part of the track is a hill that when you hit the crest you are travelling at 115mph and as you go over the crest the front wheel lifts a couple of inches and feels like it is carrying for about 40 feet! what a blast!

You should push your whole body out a bit more. You need to be shifting your whole body off the bike more... this will make the bike work better. If possible stick your knee out more, though when you start to eat through sliders you may well not want to keep it down all the time Smile.

This photo was taken at Snetterton, and gives a good idea of where you need to be sitting/hanging off in order for your knee to go down.

Notice that the bike isn't actually that far over.....

(and yes my knee isn't actually down at that point, but I wasn't at the apex either.... Laughing )

Rather than try to force your knee down, try pushing it as far back as it will go (like doing the splits Shocked )

The bike's over far enough... just hang off it more! I tend to use the inside of my leg (calf area) to help keep me on the bike, if you see what I mean - right knee down, left calf under pressure against the bike.

If you can find a nice long sweeping corner that you can go into and then have the time to keep adjusting your position (carefully!) until you have touchdown! Cool

It's also easier to '50p' the corner/roundabout when learning kneedown, or on a track turn in as late as you dare(!)

That way you are forced to tip in fast and further over than you would do normally, and you would be surprized how quickly your knee will touch down.

A word to the wise....

When your knee does go down, DON'T LOOK AT IT Rolling Eyes . Sounds obvious, but believe me....... Embarassed Shocked Laughing

Also, remember that although your knee is on the deck, if you need to tighten your line and lean further over, you can always let your knee be pushed back towards the bike. A small running off incident at Donnington taught me this....! Rolling Eyes

This is the key - once you know where you need to be on the bike, you will have cracked it, unfortunatly nobody can tell you this, you will have to find the 'feel' for it Wink

great it is a big relief that I am finally making progress in this whole kneedown saga I will have top see how I go once I try hanging off a little and pushing my knee back a bit more and I also remember on the one left hand sweeping bend that seems to go for about 100 meters I was leaning over really far and trying to touch the ground with my knee but for some reason I am subconciously pulling it in so that it doesn't touch the ground Confused weird huh!

Which track were you at, I can remember 1000s and stuff wheelied over the crest just after the Dunlop bridge at Donnington?? Id try not to stick my knee out that much, I just leave it about where it is as when you hang off that sticks it out a bit anyway. I'd say you just want to be hanging off a tad (half on half off kinda) and stick it out a bit. Then just go faster and faster into the bend. I try and think that no matter how hard I throw it into a corner it will grip, it will sit on its side all day with the pegs and my elbow scaping all day, what it comes down to is just how much power you put on and how early. And how much front brake you have on as you tip it in. Most tyres for modern sports bikes will probably have more than enough grip to have the bike fully over on its pegs with no brakes and little throttle, its just the more grip you have, the later you can brake as you can brake well into the corner and the earlier you can wack the power on, I find myself braking all the way to the apex and winding the throttle on as soon as I have initially tipped it in, so im braking and putting abit of throttle on as well, it smoothens it all out I suppose, but you will all be doing that to some extent. One of my Dads mates explained it to me, but I can't really remember whtt he told me.

He's in Australia, so not one you've rode I suspect Smile.

I found that once I could get my knee down I was more confident to lean the bike further even though it was initially just my body position that changed, not the speed/angle I was at, so probably a good start.

I know when Ive got it over far when everything seems to scrape. At Brands I was scraping the plastic sliders on my boots around every corner almost apart from Paddock Hill. They were scaping in my picture for the sig.

theres one of me here, dunno if you can make anything of how im sat of the thing. But note how far the sliders on my boots are away from the ground and my elbow and compare to my sig!! Elbow doesn't really show anything though as it depends how you are sat on the bike, if I had my chin on the tank like I would around Craners at Donnington then I'd probably have had it down by now. This pic was at Croft probably from that slow area before the haipin leading onto the start finish, the mickey mouse section!
