hey guys,

im new here and seeking advice about what bike would suite me and will feel more at "home" on.

i used to ride a 2011 KX250F and had it mapped to have a brutel pull throughout the rev range.

i will be passing my full licence very soon and will be restricted to 33bhp, im 19 and looking for a enduro/supermoto that is not going to get boring for me.

i will be using it to commute to work when its dry and in the summer time and also hitting some trails.

the bike i have been looking at is a yamaha WR250F, the older ones are not FI like my old KX250F correct?

im looking at the older bikes say... 05-07 (want e-start and a decent condition engine.

so will this bike be suitable for me? or should i look at something else? point me in the right direction guys Smile

cheers Smile

How soon's soon buddy?

Check out the numerous threads / google for the new information on the bike test. You may well have 47bhp to play with, in exchange for having to do another test when your a bit older.

I passed a couple of months ago and am in your situation, I'm going for a DRZ400.

Thumbs Up

You're too late to do the 33bhp restricted test, the last day was yesterday.

If you're under 19 you're stuck with a 125cc for now. If you're over 19 you can take a 47bhp restricted test that won't 'mature' like the old 33bhp one. If you're over 24 you can take the full-fat test.

New A2 licence limits you to 46bhp/35Kw and 0.2Kw per kilo.
Trouble with many of the more modern dirt-donks is that they are too light; and need to be 'under-restricted' to meet the power to weight requirement. Give you an idea, the 100Kg 30bhp KTM 125, is not only non learner-legal / A1 125 only licence ineligible, its also A2 restricted licence ineligible!
Going from a full-on enduro, to a trailie, is like as not going to underwhelm you. Less power, more weight and an awful loss less 'stomp' from road gearing.
Especially if the bike has to be under-restricted from even what you could have due to power-to-weight!
Personally, I would look at road bikes.
Because they are a different genre, and behave differently, you will have less pre-conceptions, and with heavier weight bike beneath you, doing things a lot differently, and with full quota of A2 power, its more likely to entertain, going through a new learning curve, of how road-bikes 'handle', and how stuff you do intuitively coming from dirt, is arse about face on tar.
Regs detur anything 'exiting'.... so think 'boring' bikes; and stuff like the GS500, ER5, GPz500, and their ilk. Not amazingly inspiring, but still a lot of fun, and a good tool to ween you off mud-pluggers and into the wider world of road-biking, where they are fairly useful all-rounders that you can do an awful lot with, besides try and go quick.

so im stuck with a 125 in till in 20? or am i still able to get a medium sized bike?

not only is a trail bike more at "home" for me, its the riding position aswell, ive sat on my dads FZR600 and i really dont like the position of those bikes.

is their any more bikes like the WR250F that i could look at, and maybe heavier to meet the licence restrictions

Until you're 19, not 20.

Thought about things like the bmw 650 gs
Husqvarna TR650 Strada and Terra (restricted), TE449 and TE511
or the KTM Duke 690 (restricted) Thumbs Up

yeh i have looked at those bigger bore bikes, i feel that if i had one and had it restricted, it will be quite sluggish and not very entertaining and not a very brutal pull.

ive researched abit more on the DRZ, seems like the DRZ400E would be he best choice if i go for a DRZ.

whats the reliability and maintenance schedules like on a enduro bike? same as a motocross bike or more forgiving?

I've ridden a enduro 125 (KMX125) on the road for quite a while and they're OK for short-ish distances, not so good if you want to travel a bit! I think the supermotos are a bit more suited though, and more cc's will definitely help
