I'm probably going to get berated by the hardcore all-weather crew here.
This picture is outside my house right now.

That's almost solid ice. My (sloped) driveway by the blue car that you can just about see in the lower right still has quite a bit of snow and ice on it.
Further on, it's like this, a mixture of slush and ice going uphill. The clear area on the right will be taken over by parked cars by the time I leave.

The forecast is for rain later today/tonight.
My street runs for about 100+ metres before the main road, which is pretty much clear.
So my question is simply would you strongly recommend against riding on a road like this? Bearing in mind I will be coming back late at night. No idea what it will be like then but going downhill on the ice and slush could be interesting. It would suck so much to drop my bike on the 100 metres of road before the main road. The alternative is the train but that is quite inconvenient to do and I'd rather not spend money on a train ticket. ____________________ I'm autistic. That means I'm smarter than you. |

Personally, I'd get in my winter tyre fitted car and drive. |

I left this morning riding longer on worse ice than that, however it wasn't sloped, the gradient doesn't look bad but is hard to tell.
End of the day it is up to you do you think you can handle it?
Just go slow and be smooth. ____________________ Well, you know what they say. If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.

If I had to, but I'd rather not.
The slushy shit isn't too bad, especially if you can pick melted patches to ride in. When it refreezes overnight though the wet parts will become black ice whilst the mounds of hard ice get a smooth slippery glaze on top. This makes it worse than flat sheet ice because your wheels skip around . I rode to work in the refrozen, lumpy slippery shit the other day, doable but risky and very unpleasant.
If you have a car or good public transport, or a time machine and a bucket of salt, it would be better. |

I've ridden on considerably worse surface conditions than that, but tbh, wouldn't choose to ride on it...
Usually been when returning home after a night shift etc, riding with both feet sliding along the floor (and on one occasion last winter, with all the rest of me sliding along the floor too ) ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

Hmm, was expecting to be ripped a new anus for being a pussy but actually got advice
I'll be returning about 10-11pm, probably no later than midnight at the absolute latest. My weather app currently tells me this:
https://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj238/ben331/weather_zps995f4536.jpg
If it's correct, hopefully it will be even easier when I come home. However, every time I have checked the forecast over the last week it has been completely wrong! ____________________ I'm autistic. That means I'm smarter than you. |

I would be all like "Yeah sod it I'll ride on it, I'll just take it slow, it's only up the road and then I'll be fine" but then Mr Yaigi would be pulling me in by the scruff of the neck going "Oh no you don't, you muppet, you'll hurt yourself and your bike, go in the bloody car, it's right there, here are the keys, and give me a lift while you're at it."
So I'd go in the car, just like I did today. I really miss my bike I used to love snow, it was the best, but since getting a bike a hate it with a passion, I just wanna be on my two wheels! ____________________ What would you do in life, if you knew you could not fail?

You're on your 125, and a varadero of all things, though
A 500 is much harder to keep upright if things go belly up. If I was going on the little YBR I'd barely be hesitating, in fact I'd probably carry it to the main road on my shoulders! ____________________ I'm autistic. That means I'm smarter than you. |

My road is similar. Loads of packed down snow turned to ice.
My way around it was to roll my sleeves up and clear then grit all the pavements from my house to the main road.
I’m now an upstanding member of the community who clears the way for grannies to walk without fear of slipping. They just have to make sure they jump out of the way as I ride down the pavement. ____________________ 2016 CBF1000F - Commuter heaven | 1994 CBR600FR - Awaiting defibrillation |
