Not sure whether anyone will be able to see it, but here's my gauss rifle tests:

Same principle, but mine's solid state and I wasn't filming when I accidentally shot myself.

Was pretty cool, it was a bit rustled when he referred to it as a "railgun" though... I was suprised he could get penetration of that box just with one coil.

Several fucking great coils and car batteries plus the controller should be pretty fun.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8XBbpemjDY

This dude reckons he gets 28J out of his coilgun. Doesn't sound like much does it? Convert to foot-pounds; 28J = 20.6 ft-lb. Bear in mind if you had an air rifle making 28J then the police would want to put you in jail for possession of a Section 1 Firearm (the legal limit being 12 ft-lb).

edit: had a look on youtube, and loads of people are rating their coilguns on the amount of energy stored in their cap banks Laughing Rolling Eyes hence titles like "450J railgun". How useless, it's about as much good as trying to say how good a soundsystem is by quoting input power...
