raspberry pi+battery pack
android phone
eee pc
<insert battery powered device running some form of linux/unix/bsd here>

best bet would be raspberry pi and a lead-acid battery/lipo if you're feeling adventurous

Really? Considering you can get a working LAMP stack up on any android device in about an hour (probably less if you have a proper keyboard) I'd probably say that would be the best bet, will almost certainly have more grunt than a pi too.

I was thinking a droid LAMP stack, it is just serving a simple site like a 100 hits a day if that, with a HTML front end and php forms with a MySQL backend.

I was wanting to be adventurous with having it portable.

Depending what you are going to serve you could get even more frugal with an Arduino? Link

yep, and most android devices have barely 8 hours of battery life

all depends what you're going for, with the right battery and marginal power saving you could run a pi for days without charging, it's also cheaper if you don't have a spare android device lying around (but who doesn't these days?)

True enough, although I suppose it depends on OP's definition of portable - USB chargers are fairly ubiquitous.
If its for hotel use I might be tempted by a plug type device, or possibly one of those standalone android media player efforts.
