Frost bite

Just out of interest has anyone here ever had frost bite from riding in severe cold?

I've not fit my hand guards yet as waiting for my renthals and it was -8 standing this morning, started to get painful on the ol hands doing 70 and took hoursfor the back of my hands to stop being painful in work.

TLDR: I need better gloves

Can't say I have. Hands get cold, ache a little, but that soon passes once I'm inside. Fit your guards now. It's not likely to be a big job and will make things a lot more comfortable for you. Common sense really.

I rode 80 miles in a blizzard on Monday morning.

By the time I was home the ends of my fingers were red and stinging for around half an hour of being in doors right down to the bone a constant sharp stinging.

Any longer in the cold it would have started to blister since then my skin has been very hard and dry maybe I have mild frostbite? I was told as long as you're in severe pain it isn't frost bite.

i've never really had an issue before, had really cold fingers before but not painful back of hands for 2 hours, although i've not been able to go 70+ before either.

Can't really fit the guards yet as i'm making the brackets myself so need to make sure the fit is right for the renthals (should arrive early next week)

Had to wait til payday to order them

I have a pair of cold killers that I wear under my usual gloves. Not had cold hands this winter yet.

I've not had frost bite but I have now got a seriously dry patch on the knuckles on my right hand caused by the cold. It's horrible, spending my days slathering my hands in moisturiser

I did have some silk inner gloves but i've lost 1 and the other is full of holes. they didn't last long.

Hey,
Years of riding in sub zero temperatures with naff gloves have left my finger tips quite desensitised. (Yes i did say fingertips. Not cock lol)

I remember getting to work and barely been able to remove my helmet due to my fingers been so cold. In fact thhey were so cold they were incredibly painful.

Its not a very nice feeling

haha yeah i've seen the forcast, still gonna to the guards though as they'll be easily removable, bolted to a metal strip which is mounted to the bar and bar ends

Few weeks ago I was suffering from sever (felt excruciatingly painful) frost nip, that's what happens when you are unprepared though. That was only for a 30mile ride.

Not had frostbite from riding but yesterday my fingertips did feel like they'd been smashed with a hammer. After only nine miles. Damn.

Yup the cold weather can make you dig deep into your concentration,I had a ride to Milton keynes and thought my fingers were dropping off.once warmed back up within an hour and a bit of itchyness the ride home was not painful at all,like it hardend the tissue to resist the cold.

Many years ago I had to ride 30 miles home in January with no gloves as some c**t nicked them in the pub
On arriving home found my hands wouldn't work so headed to A&E as they had gone purple/ black after about 8 hours I lost most of my finger nails which grew back eventually but kept all my fingers
Have lost my left little finger since but nothing to do with frost bite

Shinigami mate, buy some ski gloves from sports direct for £20! I brought some XL ones and put my summer gloves into them. They are completely wind proof and my hands have never felt warmer on a bike!

Wish I got them years ago. No more painful hands for me!

Most painful fingers: last February, riding about 45 miles at 60mph in minus temps, with the only gloves I had, summer gloves. Nearly a year ago, but I still remember the pain in those fingers - nearly as bad as the pain I experienced last week on my toes, after much riding with "feet down" on snow/ice to catch the bike if it slid, lead to my boots filling up with ice. I went through a stage towards the end of the journey, where the pain started to go away and the feet started feeling numb! Ran a warm bath and put my feet in it and my god the feeling certainly came back then (very very painful).

I don't tend to ride more than 50 miles in a day but for those doing higher mileage I imagine frostbite is certainly possible if the right gear isn't worn.

If you ride in such cold weather, why not do something about it and buy proper heated clothing and gloves.

The black bits are dead tissue that will end up being amputated.

You'd have to ride in sub zero temperatures for a fair amount of time with thin or no gloves to get frostbite. It's not likely to happen in reality.

I remember cycling in summer shoes last January with only thin socks on, I had to stop half way through the journey to get off and try and warm up my toes as they'd went completely numb - not a pleasant experience.

My only experience anywhere near to it is when I don't have my inner gloves. I have some merino wool inner gloves but they honestly don't seem the best (still feel the cold on 0C days, a little bit let down tbh).

Hey all.

For people that have "awful" gloves for riding in winter, a good tip is to buy a box of standard latex/nitrile gloves.

Before you go out, put a pair (or 2-4, 2-4 I find is the best compromise between sensation and protection) on your hands and THEN put your normal gloves on. You will find it protects your hands from the cold fantastically.

It works in three ways, firstly as a "windbreak" type thing, so the wind doesn't actually get to your skin to pull heat away, secondly it prevents your fingers getting wet and reducing possible heat loss that way and thirdly, especially so if you have 2-4 pairs on, the air between each pair of gloves and your hands acts as a great insulator, helping keep your hands warm.

I'd say 4 pairs is extreme, i.e. you have awful gloves and no other choice. However if you have decent gloves and proper undergloves, a pair or two of latex gloves under your undergloves and overgloves still does wonders I find.

It's an old trick from my racing days I was told about and it's stopped my hands from becoming numb with cold more than a few times, might be worth trying next time you have a journey in really low temperatures with awful gloves. .

As I said ive not really had anything outside of numb slightly painful fingers before. This morning was really unpleasant prob down to speed I was going and strong wind too. Could never go fast enough on the 125 to really have a massive affect.

Might look into that ski glove idea though!

+1 to paulington good tip, I do marine valeting from time to time, and use this trick in the winter, it helps a lot.
