I had my bike shop attach my car navigation(portable one) on my bike today.
My bike navigation became really old, so I decided to use my PND on both car and bike.
It was a little bit tough for me to find bike stay for my PND but I could find them.
They were combination of Herbert richter mount system and Japanese attachment.
PND is Panasonic Gorilla GP510VD.
It had cigar socket electic option only so I attached cigar socket under the seat.
Now the screen is larger, the map is the newest and navigation is really reliable.
It's not waterproof so I bought the smallest Ziplock bag, it fit well.
I will put the ziplock bag in the pocket of riding jacket.
I'm really happy now.

It costed me 20000yen (£140) total(stay, code, fee) but I'm pleased with it.

Does anyone use car navigation on your bikes?

Nice. Big screen!

I do similar with a Tomtom in the same place on handlebars, securing the mount with cable ties.

Other than that, my iPhone with Maps/Google Maps/Tomtom running through earphones also works fine as voice instructions are usually clear enough!

Great idea, how does the zip bag do when traveling? Does the wind catch it?

Don't need the bag.

Rain would need to be coming down like stair-rods to affect it.

I agree - I use my car TomTom on my bike (lashed on with double-sided Velcro) and it has survived some foul weather unprotected (well, protected only by the screen and some forward speed).

Securing the mount with cable ties is nice idea. I will do the same Smile
I often read about Tomtom rider in BCF.
I can't hear voice instruction on bike but it was alright for me.

When I tested, it was okish. I will pinch the bag with double clip on motorway. I could find good size ziplock bag and I'm lucky.

It's very rare when I need to use a sat-nav (PND), and when I do it's in a jacket pocket or tankbag via headphones.

I find them annoying and the screen distracts me. I prefer to write the route down on paper and memorise most of it. Google street view is handy for imprinting the image of tricky junctions, so often my written list will have things like 'Left onto the B4505 at The Swan pub..... Follow signs to Bovingdon....' etc.

Travelled 130 miles to the 2012 BCF BBQ with a piece of paper smaller than a postcard and used the sat-nav for music on the motorways.
Handy to have a back-up should there be road closures.

I won't use the bag if the rain is not so strong. I will keep the bag in the pocket for insurance.

Is TomTom easy to use both for car and bike?
If so, it must be very convenient navigation Smile

Good price too! I looked up bike sat navs and they were very expensive, the sort of price that car ones were when they first came out.

I'm always riding with music, using Siri at traffic lights to choose artists, songs etc. With volume and playback controls on the cable at bottom of the helmet I have full control! Laughing

I did the similar thing in UK trip when I went to sammy miller museum on rental bike.

I haven't tried Android navi yet. I wanna try mine someday what it's like.

Bike sat navis like Zumo660 are very expensive here too(about £500 without option).
My PND itself costed me 50000yen (£350) when I bought it.

The bike-specific sat navs are a ridiculous amount of money for what they are. I have a Garmin car satnav and I use it in a waterproof case. I say use I haven't actually used it yet.

A nexus 7 and a 10 quid bike mount should cost almost the same amount.
No offence but £140 is proper rip off.

I bought a cheap givi car sat nav off ebay for a tenner, mount it in a hein gericke streeline gps bag

https://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/streetline-gps-tasche.html

Bought when they have one of their may sales on for a tenner too, it mounts around the handle bars with a few velcro straps, but has multiple attachments for other things like buttons and more velcro Laughing I dont think its claimed to be waterproof, but does a good job of it! Mounts it nicely where its visible too Very Happy

Btw, anyone tried that free sat nav software stuff.. Openstreetmap i think its called. You can load it upto givi sat navs and is basically like a wikipedia map where people update it themselves. Wondered if it was worth a go Thinking

I did play with my sat-nav when I first got it. Image shows Time. Altitude and average speed. 56mph one way and 53 mph the other. It's downhill so the CB250RS had a better run back into town. Very Happy

I can't remember the name of the software but remember it was a faff installing it.
Using the gps speedo was useful. Now I can go through speed cameras at 35mph.

yeah, I just lash up cheapo car sat navs to my bike, I just run of the battery, generally I can get to most cities and big towns without checking a map (well, I look before I set off of course), but I need the sat nav for the last couple of miles

bike sat navs too pricey
