Thought id start a build thread for my cbr. Brought it in August last year as i really fancied a bike and this popped up cheap and i liked the look of it. Paid 750quid for the bike and another 50 to hold onto it for me for a month.

Bad bits

Currently SORN
Only 1 key
Fairing and swingarm a bit tatty
Not much in the way of service history and although I serviced it in 2009 it really needs some TLC.

Its been sorn since march 10 apart from to get a mot.

A couple of week before i picked it up the guy emailed me and said that he dropped it when he was putting it on the paddock stand Sad

It broke... The screen, one mirror, broken fairing where the mirror bolts on and some scratches on the fairings.

As i dont have a license and never worked on bikes before (only cars) i thought i would strip it down slightly to and get a few bits refurbed. Swing arm was abit rusty and crap and so where the fairings and exhaust.

Sorry no pics of taking it all apart as i didnt have my phone and couldnt find my camera. Anyway a partial stripped turned into a full blown strip Shocked Couldnt believe how easy it all came apart. Had everything off/out in 2 evenings. Engine, swing arm, frame, shocks, front end everything all off and labled and boxed up.

Plans are:

Clean and paint engine.
Shot blast and powder coat swingarm/frame
Shotblast powder coat wheels
shot blast powder coat forks
Anodise all ali parts black, rearsets, headstock etc
Zinc coat all nuts, bolts, washers, anything else steel
New tyres
New did chain and supersprox sprocket
Full service
Tail tidy
Mirrors with led indicators
Led rear light with indicators built in
R&g crash protectors
Bar ends
Pazzo leavers
Double bubble screen
Grips
Full exhaust
K&n ait filter
Decent tyres

More to come after i go to the gym lol

Going the full hog then Laughing

Great solid bikes. I miss mine. Clearly had been abused but still ran perfectly.

If you ever get to the stage of changing the fork seals/bushes. You'll need to put the forks under compression and use a Impact gun on the bolts at the bottom to get the bolts to free from the cartridge.

I have some spark plugs lying about (brand new) if you want them if you can cover the cost of postage? There not iridium ones though.

Started to take the forks apart so i could change the oil and get the fork tubes shot blasted, powder coated.
https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture029.jpg

Got the plastic bit off, dust cover and the spring clip inside it but couldnt get the fucking tubes out for the life of me. Need to get a blow torch out but couldnt be assed searching for it. So took the middle bit out to clean up and make sure it all looked ok

Wink

Great job so far. Can't believe how quickly and easily you've got the rest of the bike apart.

How does your homemade bead breaker work?? Do you have a design of it?

Bottom bolt is out. That's how the inner cartridge, spring bit is out.

its common on these old cbr for the seals to seize. Abit of blow torch should see it good.

when i get on my laptop il show you the youtube vid i knicked the idea from.

lol im used to working on rusty nissans and mazdas so something that has only done 25k is a piece of piss to take apart lol

Got a bit more done. Took various bits off the engine to clean and paint and also started to clean up the engine. Lots of jizer and several different wire brush attachments on my drill. Its all come up pretty decent.

Before
https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture032.jpg

Cleaned up and degreased with brake cleaner
https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture064.jpg

Bag of shit from work. Shameless plug. If anyone ever needs anyparts just drop me a pm, I will be able to give better prices than the website and free postage. Also starting to do motorbike batteries, filters etc so let me know Smile Thumbs Up
https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture079.jpg

Gave them 3 coats in all.
https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture086.jpg

Started to do the rocker cover as it needed a good clean. Wire wheeled it all, came up pretty nice
https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture100.jpg

Again will do a few coats then the vht blue samr as the sump.
https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture105.jpg

Got some more painting done last week and some other little bits and bobs

https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture118.jpg

Cleaned up the engine with the wire wheel attachment and gave it a good clean with brake cleaner then started to spray it.
https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture120.jpg

https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture122.jpg

Cleaned and masked a few more bits ready for painting.

https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture127.jpg

https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture128.jpg

All done, Pretty happy how it all came out. Engine isnt perfect but will go over any bits i missed when i take the sump off to paint that in blue. (same as the rocker cover)

https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture129.jpg

https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture131.jpg

https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f70/milez06/bike%20build/Picture133.jpg

The rocker cover looks really pale in the pics but its a nice bright blue in real life.

Got bored last sunday so went to the garage to have a tidy up. Removed all the tyres to down the side of my house as they wont be used for abit and made my self a workbench from a old wardrobe and some wood i had laying around.

Need to get some more wood to stick a few more legs on there so i can put heavier crap on there like my engine etc but its good for now. Its got 3 heavy duty hinges on it and 4 wardrobes doors bolted together.

You've really gone to town on the CBR! I wish I had the confidence to strip my bike down that far.
I just noticed you're the guy who posted the skyline in another thread. How are you finding the bike to work on compared to cars? Will be interesting to see how the bike turns out as the few people that I know that modify cars that have bikes normally make them look a bit shit for some reason.

i did get kind of worried the other day when i looked at the carbs and all the piping that i couldnt remember where shit went but ive got the owners manual and a haynes manual so hopefully ill figure it out lol.

Well this has been a piece of piss to take apart. Havent needed anything more than a 3/8 rachet and a few spanners. It crazy just to be able to pick up the engine, frame, swing arm and move it to where i want it. Theres obv alot less on the bike aswell.

The main advantage is though that parts are sooooo much cheaper. Esp compared to the skyline which has "skyline tax" for ever part. A company tried to charge me £65 for a ball joint i told them to fuck off lol.

Hopefully this will look good when its finished. Ideally looking for a 600rr rear end but havent found anything yet.

Hmmm, looking at the middle tub it could either be wiring/hosing or a really really big spider.
