His federal trial was due to be held next month. If found guilty, he could have faced up to 35 years in prison.
Following his death, Mr Swartz's family released a statement blaming "intimidation" and "prosecutorial overreach" from the criminal justice system.
'Operation last resort'
The attack on the website was scheduled to begin at midnight eastern standard time, according to documents that appear to have been posted online by Anonymous activists.
Later on Saturday the website was not functioning.
The USSC is responsible for issuing sentencing guidelines for US federal courts.
The hackers, who had labelled the attack "Operation Last Resort", said the site was chosen for symbolic reasons.
"The federal sentencing guidelines... enable prosecutors to cheat citizens of their constitutionally-guaranteed right to a fair trial, by a jury of their peers [and] are a clear violation of the 8th amendment protection against cruel and unusual punishments," the video statement said.
The statement also suggested the hackers had sensitive information relating to a number of US judges that may be made public.
There have been numerous attacks by hackers operating under the Anonymous banner in recent months.
On Thursday two British men were jailed after taking part in an attacks on payment services including Paypal, organised by Anonymous.
Government websites of the UK and other countries have also been the subjects of attacks. |

They can at will, raid and kill thousands and embed themselves in other countrys for sinister and abusive reasons, but if a ' kid ' hacks into a pc from 1000 miles away, he can do 35 years.

Whatever is in those files is hidden for now as they're AES256 encrypted, so, not a whole lot to do!
The file is just over 1GB in size and if it does hold anything interesting it's purported to be names from the Witness Protection Programme in the USA and "secrets" on every Supreme Court member.
It could well be a flop, let's see how it goes. !

Dubious.
Given that they were penetrated by the FBI previously, I'd be very careful that they don't get played into a stupid action that may bring in a Draconian Internet Patriot Act in response, that's already drawn up and waiting to be rushed through Congress without anyone reading it. |
Well yeah, it would be dumb for obvious reasons, they'd end up getting hunted down and raped in the most extreme manner by the long member of the US Justice System.
Like I said, if it does, it wouldn't surprise me if it's just 1GB of almost useless crap anyone can get hold of but the threat of what it could be will make the USDOJ just defecate into their underwear with worry.
Everyone has secrets, especially people who get on to the Supreme Court, got to bury a lot of people in the mountain you climb in order to get that high. .

Undoubtedly, but the idea that such info, beyond low level tittle tattle, similar to the info wikileaks releases (beyond it's initial sheepdipping video of burning an Apache crew) is just sitting there waiting for some wannabe 1337 H4X0rz to get hold of it seems naive in the extreme.
If you really wanted info on the more scurrilous and scandalous goings on of the high level inhabitants in DC you'd be better trawling and filtering a myriad of investigative journalist sites, interviews and books, although to most, like anything else outside their small cosy bubble, that would be regarded as "conspiracy theory".

Hey Anonymous, if you're listening (I doubt) how about digging the REAL juicy info on the Franklin Scandal, the elite paedophile ring that included Boystown, senior members of the Republican party in the mid to late 80s, tours of the White House given to underage rent boys and similar [To the uninitiated dig out ex-Senator John de Camp's book, "The Franklin Cover Up" or the unreleased Yorkshire TV* documentary "Conspiracy of Silence", that de Camp was sent a raw copy of in an anonymous brown paper envelope]. The FBI et al must have some juicy info on who was involved at what level, and what they knew went on behind close doors. And what do they know of what goes on today?

Kudos to the British news voice they used!
The best thing about Anonymous is that it's just a bunch of nerds who would have once maintained a noble silence with their political opinions, because it's fair to say that different people deal with ideological issues in different ways, and some people don't like to physically speak out. But now there is the Internet, which provides a perfect platform for these otherwise quite unheard people to act on their beliefs and play a very serious part in the workings of democracy, in a society that is secretly rather undemocratic when you really think about the very-big picture.
The Anonymous lot easy to not notice because they operate entirely online, but I bet the government shit themselves at these kinds of videos. There will be plenty of highly liberal computer nerds with a lot more Internet wizardry than any of the top government guys - or considered another way, all epic computer nerds on the planet, regardless of nationality, united against the more sinister things in the world. The people really do have the upper hand here.
