Got a bit of an issue - I don't think it's terminal but I'll give it a look over

Basically when th ebike is idling ~1500-2000 rpm, the engine speed drops to 1200-ish for a second then comes back up to idle again. I'm thinking a fuel/air issue, so I'm going to pull the air filter out and give it a once-over. If that doesn't solve it onto the carbs. Anyone else have this problem or any other suggestions where to look?

Bike is a W-reg GPZ500 with 36k, the dealer I bought it from ~5000 miles ago said it had a full service then but I'm not convinced!

Cheers

I'd check plugs first, as it's quick & easy, then move on to carbs. Could well be that they need balancing and the air screws adjusting.

Have you checked the valve clearances lately?

Will do. No I haven't it's another thing the garage said they'd done and were within tolerance... I'll try one thing at a time until it sorts itself out!

Thumbs Up

If you decide to balance carbs yourself, Carbtune columns are easy to use - a lot more stable than mercury gauges.

I balanced the carbs on my GPz 750 with a few meters of plastic tubing and some old fork oil, I think it cost in total about £2... maybe £3

Don't forget to clean out the water filter tube thing that goes to the carbs, I seriously doubt it is an issue, but it's worth clearing it out anyway.

Wouldn't mean a lot without pictures, so I might do a tutorial on it (unless there is one already)

I've seen a thread on exactly that before, made with a U of tubing attached to a backboard with some water with red food dye in it. connect both ends to each carb, adjust til the levels are even again. I'll see if I can dig it up.

EDIT: ta-da! basic instructions here

Water and colouring is fine if the balance isn't too far out... I had about 1.5m on each side (1 & 2 and 3 & 4)... 2 carb sucked all the water instantly and stalled the engine.

I used 3m each side and fork oil, and even then had to keep killing the engine and adjusting to try balancing a bit more.... I ended up using all the tubing on carb 1 & 2, then done 3 & 4... THEN done 2 & 3

Not on my GPZ it's not Laughing The plugs are an absolute shitter to get to, you need (if you haven't got the original toolkit) to get a really long, really thin walled plug puller - seriously, those things are down really deep, really tight holes! Your best bet is to get something cheap off ebay as the cheaper it is the thinner the metal will be!
Also, be really careful - make you get all the grit and crap that's fallen into the recesses out before you pull the plug for obvious reasons. You'll need a screwdriver with a ball of blutack or tape or something similar to get the job done.
Seriously, I found it a real PITA but good luck Smile Thumbs Up

I know! Makes me wish I just rode my old TZR - I could plug chop that without removing any fairings or anything! Very Happy

I just ground an old spark plug key to fit, then used a magnet to pull the plugs out.

With mine the one problem I have (well had as I've put shit loads of instant gasket around them now), when it rains the water was running down the top of the engine and pooling up on the left hand side, this caused the water to get into the first spark plug recess and was a pain to dry out before sealing everything
