PostPosted: 16:20 - 29 Jan 2013    Post subject: 600cc to 1000cc?? Moving up on commuting. Advice needed Reply with quote

Hello people.

I've been with a Suzuki Bandit GSF600S for the past 2 years and I feel its time now to move up a little.

I mainly commute 20 miles round trip daily in London but enjoy a get away ride outs on weekends and I'm going to wales in March.

My concern is that a 1000cc bike might be a lot higher on fuel consumption.

My top bikes are...

Suzuki DL V-Strom 650 - 1000
Honda Veradero 1000
Honda transalp 650 - 700
Honda deauville or NT 650-700

Its gotta be a tall touring bike.

Any advice welcome

Cheers

the V strom is supposed to be an excellent all rounder..and I believe better on fuel that the 650 due to not having to change down so much etc...find the Suzuki owners club website, and ask on there - i think they have a dedicated V strom forum.

I think you will find the drop in fuel consumption minuscule.
Thumbs Up

edit: if a drop at all.

Because I'm 6.2f tall.
They are more comfortable, specially if you r tall. And I ride everyday.

I really like the Vstrom 1000, especially with full hard luggage they could be a really capable all rounder.

Why is the deauville on that list? Not only is it about 1/3 less powerful than your bandit, but it's also physically smaller.

You want a TDM900 Thumbs Up Very Happy

Lighter than most of the bikes you list and much better suspension and brakes, I get 45-50mpg on mine in and out of London.

Dude all i'd say is forget the Varado 1000 quickly!

The logic of needing a 1.0L bike for a 20mile commute inside London is a bit hard for me to get my head around, and Moving up from 600 to 1000cc just because you want to change bike this year is also a tricky one to get too?

Of course most Litre bike's will not be fantastic on fuel for commuting and almost all of them could be a damn site worse on juice than a Bandit 600.

Back to the Honda, It's a big heavy adventure style road bike, with a downgeared VTR1000 engine. Thankfully it's also got a much bigger tank than the Storm, but as nice as these V-twins are and as nice as they sound with the gear driven cams, they are fuckers for drinking like a sailor on leave!

The Storm could easiily dip to 30mpg or below, and the engine surely can't be magically much more fuel friendly in a much heavier lower geared massively less aerodynamic bike like the Varado.

Just stay away from a 1000 V-Twin. I was getting 29mpg when I commuted on the Tuono. With a 90-100 mile fuel tank, my 2nd home was the Petrol Station Confused

He might have super long legs or super long torso, so what you think is completely irrelevant.

Again why?

What does 1000cc do that 600cc doesn't? 160 mph rather than 130mph?

40 gallon tank Laughing

I think you mean it does 200+ miles to a tank.... Rolling Eyes

My Versys does 60 MPH and I'm lucky to see 240 miles per tank full, and that a 19 Ltr tank. That is just over 4 gall (UK).

I commuted for 9 months on a 600 and the last 4 on a 900, I definetly recommend the bigger engine.

Personally I'd actually recommend a sports bike as the dimensions of the bike make filtering much easier. That said even on my divvy I'm faster than lots of people through traffic so it's as much balls and experience as the bike you're riding.

On a slightly related note I can also highly recommend adding the xj900 divvy to your growing list, for filtering it isn't the best, but it has a pretty decent tank range (180-200 miles) and is a shaftie too.

Rode my blade in london for a year. I was getting 80 miles between reserves, so on that basis, I wish I had a 600! You're always slipping the clutch so much that it'll knacker it. Also sat at idle for a good 5 mins of a 30 minute journey used to cook my engine a few times! 115 degrees on the temp sensor wasn't uncommon!
