Crash protectors, crash bungs, mushrooms, etc. Nobody said anything about bolting anything to fairings.
The do do something in a crash, I can attest to that. They reduce damage in a lowside slide and potentially eliminate damage to fairing in a drop from standstill.
On a naked bike engine bars or even an engine cage like on stunt bikes are a better option.
There are lots of commercial offerings, shouldn't be necessary to bodge things with a welder.
