Hi all,

really pissed off, this is the second time I've had a nail in my tyre recently.

This tyre hasn't even finished it's 200 mile breaking in period yet.

Last tyre was almost finished anyway so I didn't mind buying new.

What's the score with repairing bike tyres, can it even be done like cars or is the general advice not to get them repaired.

Laughing Best comment today.

Where is it in the tyre exactly? Got a photo? I get all of mine plugged.

If you want to stop getting nails in your tyres, keep out of the crosshatching.

You can repair a tyre subject to the amount of damage and the position on the tread. I have just had my back tyre fixed and it works fine.

I don't know the name of the parts for a tyre (I'm sure it'll have a proper name), but it's in the "lesser"section.

Ie, take a smooth slick tyre, and cut out some patterns, well it's in the "cut out" pattern part. The thinner rubber area.

Repairs can only be made in the centre tread area, to be within 25% of the centre line, most motorcycle repair shops use vulcanising, plugs are mainly for cars but can be used, beware of z rated tyres as a fitter may blah you and say they can't be repaired, absolute bollox, and don't use tyre weld as this will piss them off even more.
If you have a good relationship with your tyre place no worries, if you don't beware of a blag for a replacement.
Good luck !

Not sure where your information is from but its wrong.

Most tyre places will try to use a 3mm mushroom that is vulcanised, a 6mm can be used as well but a lot of places don't like using them on motorcycle tyres.

Well done, so was/am I. I would have hoped that a professional tyre fitter would have read the side of the can of vulcanising solution he used to 'glue' mushrooms and realised that it said vulcanising solution on it.

You are still wrong.

I had a screw through one inch from centre, through thinnest part diagonally. Mate is a tyre fitter and plugged it. Been fine for about 300 miles so far. If I had the money id probably replace as a precaution but it was brand new and didnt fancy spending another 100.

Yeah the nail is actually really close the centre of the tyre, no more than a cm away probably.

So things are fairly likely I can get it repaired then.

Thanks all,

I'll give the local bike tyre centre a ring tomorrow.

This is the link to a page on my local bike tyre centre's website:

https://www.buckleytyre.co.uk/Motorcycle-Tyre-Repairs.asp

They do repairs, but would somebody please check that what it says is the service and repair that I want.

Google searching has brought up contradictory results.

Ie, "vulcanisation repairs exceed the life of the tyre",
and "mushroom plugs are good for 20 miles only",
"repairs should be done on the inside of the tyre only".

The centre I was planning on using (link above) seem to offer a mushroom vulcanised plug from the outside.

Is this a permanent repair?

I want to get it fixed tomorrow.

Cheers.

One of those kits. Ive used it on both bikes. The CBR6 had a new rear tire, maybe 500 miles on it. Noone wanted to repair it, so I did. 3k miles done, tested 142mph. I keep kit in bag, doesnt take much space.

Only downside is the delivery time if you dont already have one, but there are UK sellers if you pay more

You can't vulcanise from the outside, it would mean you are attaching the mushroom to the tread are so it would wear through with the tread.
