Just got to work this morning and the bike has been idiling at about 3000 rpm where it normally keeps at about 1500. It feels as if the throttle is stuck open just a little.

Any ideas?
Thanks

If it's a cable from the throttle to the engine check it's not just dried out or sticky from cold or crud off the road.
WD40 or a dedicated cable lube might help.

Does the choke leaver feel like it is floppy? i.e. the choke isn't going off totally? (as above comment re throttle cable, it could the a sticky choke cable).

The choke lever feels a little more loose than normal i think.

I had a look at the freeplay in the throttle cable and sorted that but it still happens. I cant see to lube it at the moment.

What? You mean to say that you've never 'lubed' something that was 'stiff' in the dark before? Rolling Eyes

Very Happy

I realised i was rubbish at describing what was happening to it so i took a quick video of what was going on.

The revs go up after about 30 seconds of the engine running, they only drop again once its in gear and i let the clutch out a little. As soon as i pull it back in the go straight back to 3000ish.

Nice weather .. Very Happy

At the end of the day, there is only one thing that can make the engine rev up like that. That is more air into the system. This could be from you opening the throttle, or because you have an air leak somewhere.

I'd be lifting the tank up and having a play about under there. You will be able to see the throttle cable and choke cable, but also try moving the airbox about, it could be the airbox has come slightly adrift? Or the carbs have come out of the rubbers a bit, or the rubbers are cracked/split.

If all checks out, then it could be the mixture screw?

Oh and when was the last time you balanced the carbs?

Well I had a problem at the end of November so I took it to the garage and apparently the cleaned and balanced the carbs then.

If things have been disturbed under the tank, then it could well be the airbox coming astray. It is pretty simple to lift the tank and have a rummage. Suzuki are even kind enough to give you a little 'propping' rod Cool

Thanks, i'll take a look at it in the morning. I'm pretty terrible with the mechanical side of things, only been riding since october.

The bike can pretty much move off if i let the clutch out in first without stalling. Could it still be too much air in or would this definitely be the throttle cable?

Is that not a sign that you'll be 'under it's hood' quite a lot??

Could be either, but where the idle goes up down, then UP again, it is probably not the cable i.e. if the cable was sticking, it would never go down then up again. Sadly it is time to take a looksee ...

On the video the revs are only going up and down because i put it in gear and was letting the clutch in and out.

I had a look today and couldnt see anything out of place. I adjusted the idle speed screw and lubed the throttle cable too (was only with wd40 though until i buy some cable lube). I thought it had sorted it but i went out on the bike a few hours later and the revs crept up a little to about 2000. The throttle does feel a little bit sticky though.

I had the same problem when my carbs were unbalanced, but it's a bit unusual for them to suddenly go like that. Know anyone that would have some vacuum gauges or a 'sync tool'? You can make your own with bottles and hoses haha

They apparently got done in november but i dont trust the garages work 100% as it took them 3 attempts to fix the problem that time.

I dont know anyone else that rides bikes, probably just take it to a garage if it keeps on.

Air leak sound probable if they've had the lid off the bike a few times they may have nin-compentently re-fitted an air hose etc.

You could whip it off yourself and have a quick Butcher's or take it back to the baistirts. Shit happens and sometimes first impressions are just that. Giving them a bit of time and your patience can help if trouble next time. Sometimes customers who jump ahp an' dahn get short shrift from the dealer. I get on OK at the BMW dealers I've been using since 2007. But then I've given them a load of £££ over the years oo.
