Hi all
Does anyone know how to recover a sql backup that has been password protected.

I'm using this to restore the backup but it errors saying the password is wrong.

RESTORE DATABASE DB1 FROM DISK='\\MyServer\MyDirectory\DB1_Full20081022.BAK' WITH PASSWORD='password'

Thanks

that is the problem...
no ones remembers who did the backup and what the password might have been.
not even a clue to its length or complexity.

Quote:
Who setup their backups to begin with? This is one of those danger areas when dealing with databases, because it was password protected for a reason, and while you say it is their database and has a list of their clients, what proves that to be true? That said, the password doesn't encrypt the data, so a third party tool like Redgate Object Level Recovery Native, or Apex SQL Recovery can be used to extract the objects and information out of the password protected backup.

Hope that help Thumbs Up

its a not a DB, the db is on line and working

its a backup file, of a DB that they are trying to restore which somebody has password protected, and subsequently lost the password
