How hard is to get one? I was refused credit in the past (unsecured loan/credit card). The main thing at the time was that my 2 credit cards were pretty much maxed out. I'm almost scared to apply for credit as I fear I my application may get declined.

In my opinion my credit history is good.. I've got mortgage since 2007 (never missed a payment - have been overpaying as well), 2 credit card with current balance 15% on one, and about 60% on the other. I had 2 loans in the past that have been settled but still showing in my credit file (never missed a payment).
I have one late payment (I was 2 days late) on one of my credit cards in 2010.

Apart from that no loans, hire purchase, no mobile contracts currently. No Bancrupcies, no CCJs, CIFAS clear, no defaults etc.

Income is fairy low as I work only part time and get about £13k per annum.

I need to borrow maybe £4k.. with probably £1k of my deposit (£500 would be better).

should be fine, you have a good payment record and your balances are not using more than 80% of available credit, go for it

I will try in April then.. I normally wouldn't go for a loan, but at least once in a life time I'd like to buy something nicer lol Laughing

If it doesn't work then I'll go for another "classic" haha

Wouldn't it be better trying to get a 0% credit card with a 4k limit instead?

It probably would.. But I don't want to get disappointed if I don't get it.. I've heard that it's easier to get a car/bike loan instead.

You look to have a more solid credit history than me and I recently (2days ago) got a Tesco credit card with a 4k limit and 16months 0%.

My credit history is about 3 years of credit cards with 1 late payment (2 days) and about 8 years of direct debits/contracts (none missed).

The Tesco application is all online and they tell you if your accepted on the spot, took about 5 mins from start to finish.

I've got quite low limits on my cards.. total just over 4k. So getting another 4k card would be a difficult one. Everything because of my low income.

I've got Tesco Credit Card 16.9% APR (I'm using about 15% of my limit) and Barclaycard Simplicity 6.8% APR (I'm using 60% of my limit, by April can probably push it down to 40%). I guess I could also ask for limit increase.. but I really rather not do that.

If I get a loan I will probably close Tesco CC account.

Avoid the loans!

Assuming you're borrowing 4k over 2 years that's about £200pm in repayments.

You can get no end of decent bikes in the sub £2k range (my monster 750 was only £1650). Given you already have £1000 and can afford repayments of £200pm then you should easily be able to save the money quickly. If you can't then you're probably best not getting a loan!

I borrowed for a brand new car about 8 years ago, never again. The only loan I take nowadays is credit cards (for convenience) and mortgages...

You'll be a lot richer if you avoid credit!

I know that well.. I remember still how 2 loans (£15k total) + overdraft (£2k at the time) + 3 credit cards (owing about £6k) were limiting my monthly budget.

I would like to be sensible but get something better and most importantly newer that will last a bit longer. I was thinking a 3 year loan up to £4k. I would probably repay earlier anyway.

It's quite a quality/age difference of bikes you can get i.e. get for £2k and for £4k. That made me think of borrowing some money.

I would like something decent but not over the top.. i.e. 2007 CBR600RR

Why are you over-paying on the mortgage when you've got credit card debt outstanding? Eh?

Since you have the money available to over-pay, then can you just increase your mortgage? Tell them it's for home improvements. Every home is better with a bike.

It's worth having a free trial on Experian's CreditExpert (www.creditexpert.co.uk) to have a look at your credit report. It will show you what the lenders are looking at when they decide whether to lend. It will give you an idea of whether you're likely to get a loan before applying for it, as too many applications can go against you.

Not quite, it will tell you Experian's guess at what it thinks lenders do or don't want. Only a lender can truely tell you, the credit report is only part of it.

Not to mention there are 3 big credit report companies (no doubt more smaller ones) whose to say the lender uses Experian? Data doesn't have to be shared but most likely will be.

that is correct, but experian is considerably bigger than equifax which is a hell of a lot bigger than call credit...

Is it not better to get a bank loan and pay cash for the bike? It was the case a few years back as the % was lower.

It's a joint mortgage. We overpay it every month. It's not like I can just use the money as it belongs to my wife as well. We agreed to overpay to build up future deposit to move to a bigger house by 2016 so we treat it as fixed monthly payment towards the goal.

The credit cards are mine and I can play with balances of these only. She's got her credit card.

I checked 3 CRAs recently Experian/Equifax/Callcredit and they show what I said in the first post.

I don't know what interest rate to expect if I get a loan.. last time I took two loans the rates were 5.9% and 7.5% APR.

Buy a thousand pound bike (your deposit money) and save up until you can upgrade.

Checkmyfile gives you all 3 scores and shows you why each company scores you different. Don't have to pay more for the score neither.

So, how long do you expect it to last? My '97 Ducati can be expected to last for a few more years yet. I'm also running a '71 fiat, again I don't expect it to suddenly stop working any time soon.

Pick something within budget and get someone to help you look it over for anything seriously wrong with it.

Buy something at the £1600 range, sell it in 3 years time for a similar amount and put it with the £5000 you've saved in payments and get summat really decent and own that outright too!

Looks like the majority on here is against getting into debt. I was the same until recently... I still have time to think about it. Life is much easier without debt.

Thanks for replies Thumbs Up

Buying a 4 or 5k bike when you're earning 13k is questionable.
I suspect you know this.
At absolute best it's a full year of your income after essentials.

Add in credit card debts and it becomes lunacy IMO.

Mate, do yourself a favour and sign up with Experian (www.experian.co.uk) - you get a month free.

Have a look at your score, get on the electoral roll at current address if not already on. If your score is between 750-900 (top being 999) you will get the loan. There are some great deals on new bikes, 0 - 9% APR, and deposits of up to £1000. Get yourself a nice new toy, you deserve it!

I was in the same boat as you, except the only reason my score wasn't high is because I had no credit history at all (first credit card at age 23 and I'm now nearly 25).

Hope this helps.

I looked at that from a perspective how much money I've got left in my pocket every month and it's about £350. Adding £120/month loan and £40/month insurance doesnt seem to bad.
I don't want to go into exact figures but our total income is over twice as much as essential spending (mortgage, car stuff, petrol, bills, food). So £160 extra a month wouldn't cripple us in any way.
But I understand what you are saying.

I think it's free but I never bother with their score system. Every lender is different and has its own criteria. I buy the reports for £2.
