Being sent overseas to work for a bit.

They chose some cheapo tickets. With a 13 hour Evil or Very Mad stop in Doha, and a 16 hour stop on the way back 3 weeks later.

I don't mind transits as long as there is something to do, Frankfurt I was stuck there 14 hours and the Weiss Bier and some interesting people made the hours fly. But Qatar I think is dry and filled with Arabs and quite simply I can't stand Arabs, call me racist if you want.

I passed through Doha once in 2010 and thought calling it a rathole was insulting to ratholes. There were bad signs when we were bused to and from the terminal taking over half an hour. I was there for 2 hours, and was dying for a slash but was nearly over powered by the smell a good 25 metres from the entrance to the gents and seeing people wash their feet in the sinks, Sick. Cracked cheapo plastic seats and horrendous overpriced food and people sleeping everywhere.

It MIGHT be possible to get a quickie transit visa.

But is there anything to see in Qatar? Or is the whole country like the airport? But if the 'world class airport' Doha is supposed to be is that bad then what is downtown going to be like?

Book yourself into one of the lounges (they serve free alcoholic drinks), eat loads of free food, get a shower and watch tv. Okay so non of its actually free as you pay about £25 to get in but even so!!

I just spent 5 hours last week at Schiphol, there is only soo much you can do at an airport and frankly I find UK airports less of a rip off as those overseas.

I don't fly enough to get a lounge pass and I only ever fly economy, so I normally sit in a corner and read or watch films. The lack of alcohol wouldn't bother me, nothing worse than needing to pee on a plane.

Schipol is okay the first time you go but the other countless times I always end up in Murphys pub haha!

In Doha there are art galleys and museums, if you're into that then go out of the airport if not stay in.

Go to a lounge and chill out there. The times I have been in the past I never went into the lounge but go in there for sure.
Doha is dry unless you are staying in a hotel, in which case some not all have alcohol but for staying customers only.

what's your final destination?

Oh the hard life of the Jet Set. You don't get this sort of issue at the 39A bus stop, As for it being dry? Last Tuesday it pissed it down.

We had a 2 hour late night layover in Doha about 34 years ago.

What a hole, couldn't wait to leave.

If you can leave the airport head to the Mall in Doha city. You can spend a few happy hours buying things cheaply and eating gorgeous ice cream from the cool ice cream stand (you know the scene in Cocktail where they throw the drinks around? They do that - but with ice cream)
