Hi,
We have 4 flats opposite the front of our house. The 2 middle flats have security lights which shine into our bedroom and living room windows.

Last night i dropped a letter into each flat asking them nicely to turn them off(I don't like confrontation).

Today one of the flat tenants came round and said the lights have to stay on from dusk till dawn as their landlord had told them so. Apparently to stop kids hanging outside them (No one ever hangs out round these garages as the front doors straight onto the pavement) My GF lied and said we hadn't posted the letter (Grrrrr).

If these lights are not switched off what is the next step?

There is no need for lights as they serve no purpose.

Cheers,
Shaun.

You need to get over there and state that whilst you were not the author of the poison-pen letter, the lights do, however, annoy the hell out of you.
If security lights are to be used then they should be angled so as not to cause distress to neighbours. They probably ought to be wired through a motion detector as well.

Arrange for someone to smash the offending security lights while you are in the pub in front of various alibis and on CCTV at the time the crime took place.

Air rifle from bedroom window at 4am is the only logical step now.

The North East Lincolnshire Community Pride Stazi can assist using The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, Section 102.

That'll show 'em.

Catapult and an icecube under the cover of darkness. Wouldn't want to leave a deformed lead pellet as evidence of what happened. Given that you put your head above the parapet.

hmmmm? could you not just ask them to angle them a bit better so they shine downwards and not into your bedroom?

Hi,
If it shines into my property it becomes my problem!

Why should i have to buy blackout curtains out of my hard earned cash? The damn thing shouldn't be there in the first place!

Shaun.

It's like them complaining about your noisy motorbike etc. Tough, everyone has to be a little tolerant of others, and its not unreasonable to have a motion activated light. Save your moaning for when you encounter a real problem.

The council put up a blocker on the Belisha beacon outside our house because the flashing was a nuisance.

Complain.

No, but their light doesn't illuminate constantly from dusk till dawn either does it? It goes on and off, you come and go.

The fact is as you're "shy of confrontation" and your girlfriend doesn't even have the balls to admit the letter originated from your household, you're better off getting the curtains. THAT is the best option for someone who doesn't like confrontation. A practical solution for a minor problem that doesn't end up with a war between neighbours. If you get the authorities involved they'll probably guess it was you, they already did guess correctly that you wrote the letter.

Disagree all you like but it's actually the most sensible suggestion here so far.

The lights are not motion sensored. They're a 175W dusk till dawn light on constantly from dusk till dawn.

If you have a problem with my reply don't post. I asked a question because it was a problem for me. I couldn't give a rats arse if you wouldn't find it a problem.

Right, well I took security light to imply motion activated, they usually are.

Regarding you telling me not to post - this is a public forum and I put forward a reasonable suggestion. Feel free to cherry pick only the answers you want to hear, but as for "don't post", well I say fuck you good Sir, for you do not have the right to tell me that.

I guess I can put this out there, even though I understand the annoyance of the light, if you wanted a possible remedy, I have some blackout lining left over from my last job. Looking at your profile, you're too far away for me to offer to modify your existing curtains, but I can send you the lining at least. PM me if you'd like.

Suggest angling the light, and possibly putting a hood on it. Communicating with a neighbour isn't necessarily a confrontation.

As to the suggestions concerning vandalism, don't shit where you eat. I've had dealings with a few of the local scum (and yes, you're scum if you are so fucking cowardly as to damage another persons property by stealth) and I can say with the utmost sincerity that I would hope you get the sound thrashing you so richly deserve Smile
