OK it might seem like a daft question, but I've loosened every nut and bolt I can find, removed the starter, water pump and various other bits and pieces around the area.... the 2 halfs seem to be stuck together with shit loads of instant gasket, I've managed to get a .004 feeler gauge along 1 side (with a bit of sawing motion, but can't get anything into the other side), I had a little try at seperating the 2 halfs using gentle taps on the tabs around the bottom of the engine, but didn't want to force anything... so nothing budged.

Do I just use a bit more force with the rubber mallet to split them?

2 stroke? it's probably the crank bearings holding it together.

Sorry should have said it's the zxr engine.

Anyway I found what the problem was... I thought I'd get away with not removing the whole clutch assembly.

I managed to split the crankcase quite easily... only to find it's all being held together by the oil pump chain Embarassed

Which does leave me with a bit of a problem... I don't have any tools for holding the clutch in place to remove the centre nut (although I'm going to make the tool when I get some sturdy enough metal). I can't get the spanner on to the bolt properly to loosen the cog on the oil pump, and can't get enough slack to pull the chain over it.

That's what I get for trying to get round removing the clutch housing (was a pita removing it from the GPz). Embarassed

The worst thing you can do is try to cut corners. You take an engine apart the opposite way it was put together.

Have you got a haynes?

Yes I have... I've read through it, jumped from one chapter to another to another to another to another.... just to find out how to open the petrol cap Rolling Eyes

I had a quick look through, couldn't be bothered jumping from chapter to chapter anymore and just started loosening nuts and bolts (on the plus side I haven't just thrown them all into one tub this time).... also I am taking it apart the opposite way it was put together.... they put the nuts and bolts in everywhere... I'm taking them out of everywhere.... currently the engine is in 2 rooms, the hall and taking up more space than the actual bike on the drive. So far I've had to cut 1 exhaust stud, snapped a bolt from the front water pipe into the engine and destroyed both rear engine mount bolts

i've just taken the clutch centre nut off my crf450 earlier today. I dont have a fancy tool for holding the clutch, i just put the front wheel up to a wall, stand on the back brake lever and undo the nut. I do all the tough bolts like front sprocket, clutch centre and flywheel whilst the engine is still in the frame. makes it much easier
