To add to my tale of woe, I've noticed a rattle on deceleration. If the bike is idling, and I just open the throttle slightly, then let go, it'll rattle until the revs go to idle. It rattles intermittently on idle too.

I'm guessing this is the dreaded cam chain rattle - where do I go from here? Can I remove the tensioner and refurb it somehow? Do I need a manual one? Ta.

This noise has only just started :-/

Hardly ''dreaded'' rattle if it's something that costs £50 and takes half an hour to fit.

Dreaded is something like big ends.

Easy job....just don't use the bike untill you buy a new one. Had one go on a 750 srad and recently one on a 95 blade. Cheap easy fix but spend the extra couple of quid on a new gasket too!
