whip open RiDE and see what's on offer - they're usually the best. I've heard that ABUS are known to be quite good - and so is the Motrax English chain.

Don't bother with magnum, I think they make theirs out of marzipan or something.

I`ve had an Abus chain for ages, very good by all accounts. Cost me about a ton.

i found one or should i say 3?

https://www.busters-accessories.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=OXOF149

Go here, you can buy 3 chains for 20 pound, instead of buying one thats supposedly unbreakable why dont you buy 9 breakable, by the time they cut through all 9 you would be back ready to beat them over the head with your helmet.

I bought a really heavy duty chain from B&Q and covered it in lots of thick foam, does the trick. Thumbs Up

If you have said in your insurance policy that it is going to be chained up, you are most likely to have agreed to chain up your bike using an insurance approved chain and lock. Check the small print, or call them and ask them, but they the insurance company will want you to use a Thatcham approved chain as otherwise you could be using a daisy chain which wouldn't be of use. If you have said in your insurance policy that it is going to be chained up, and your bike gets nicked when it's not chained up you're not going to get a penny from your insurance so if you've specified it then you need to use it 100% off the time if you want your insurance to be valid for theft cover.

with chains and such what you gotta remember if they want the bike they can take it, if its got chain on or not, my friend was telling me how he could steal any bike chained up within a few seconds with a hydraulic cutters and do it silently.

motrax are no good but if you want it to for insurance reasons then it dont matter. ive got the chain that ride magazine tested and its supposedly the best. set me back 200 quid though but after i got burgled theres no point risking it again. the chain is called the immobleiser and the padlock is a squire. if anyone has any old ride mags that they keep then you might be able to have a look it was about 8 months ago. anyway motrax was one of the worst as they only had to pick the lock which took no time and abus wasnt much better.
and they also proved that spending a lot on a chain deosnt necesserily mean its harder for burglars to break.
but anyway. if they want your bike then theyll get it so theres nothing you can really do if theyre after it.

If you're still looking, Hein Gericke have a very good deal on at the moment. The Oxford Monster chain.
Basically it's part of their "gold series" which means it's been tested to be uncuttable and unbreakable for five minutes. Doesn't sound much, but the cheaper chains can be cut/smashed much more quickly.
They're selling it for £99.99, with a cut carry sack to strap it to the pillion seat, instead of £169.99.

FWIW you might want to consider 2 (or more) chains.
Heavy duty one(s) for when bike parked at home and a lighter, more managable chain(s) (+ disc lock) for locking the bike when out and about.

I have an ABUS MAXIMUM LEVEL 10 25mm thick 100cm long cable lock.

Feels very secure, but I'm still getting another 2 chains around the lampost for it. Cost me £35, not sure if its silver or gold safety wise. It could probably get some money off insurance but I only done it for peace of mind.

you can get a good chain that is 'ride' recomended from the squire site for about 100 quid. i trust ride as they are a good idea of how strong it is as they actually tyr and break them as if they were a burglar and they are independant soo. and that is the kind of test i trust more that how many pounds of pressure a machine can put on it befopre it breaks.
i have got one of those in my garage to a ground anchor and then a small and light chain that i use when im out. also a disc lock round the front as most steering locks are next to useless.
