Boring title I know...

My wife passed a2 before Christmas.
Been looking at strapping up a cbr250r looking to keep it for 3 years.

When we come to sell will anyone be looking for an underpowered bike, as no one will still be on the 33 bhp restriction...

Anyone got any thoughts on this...

In my opinion, 250s didn't make a great deal of sense back where there was the 33bhp limit license, and they make even less sense now with the new laws and system.

Noone can really give a definitive answer though.

Want my Lifan or GPz305? Wink

I don't know, If I were to commute the 30 mins or so into the centre of manchester, having a bit more power than a 125 would be nice, would be a bit better when doing the odd motorway stint but not really needing a bigger bike -

so there might be people such as myself who want one purely for commuting to save the nice bike for the weekend.
the market might just be a bit smaller.

Saw an MT03 at a dealer nearby for £2600 5000m 59 reg. I reckon he's underpriced that bearing in mind the new rules....same goes for a few XT660Z's I've seen. Your wife might be better off restricting one of these 46bhp bikes for resale value as they are just as economical

I'm not sure what the new licencing laws have to do with the value of the bike.

Under the 33bhp rule, 250s could get in under the limit, but they still weren't popular - people bought bigger bikes and restricted them. People that owned 250s bought them because they wanted a 250, not because it was the most powerful thing they could ride.

A CBR250 could be a different matter though, particularly if you're paying good money for it. It's a slow commuter styled to look fast. If you want a 250 commuter, go for something cheaper and more crash-friendly.

Some of us went the native 25kW route while we sweated out our restriction. It's an ass-u-me-umption about how many 250s were sold to commuters looking for efficiency, versus Ninja 250s (or CBR250Rs) sold to Daryll coz dem is well fast.

In either case, the NC700 and G650GS will now give you the same mpg as a 250 for not much more money, and Daryll will be clutching a 35kW A2 license which will get him on a CBR500R (and still pretty good claimed mpg), so 250s are obsolete either way.

I can't fathom what Suzuki are doing importing the Inazuma, or Kawasaki the Ninja 300. I'd suppose they know what they're doing, but their sales figures suggest otherwise.

And just because someones licensed for A2 doesn't mean they wont want a 250, I thought about one but 20 bhp Tut Tut

obviously there is demand, as much as individual opinions variate, people may think those on 250's are fools because they are too slow or whatever, they probably think those on 500+ are dickheads with no sense ? supply and demand, simples!

250's might be popular with small distance commuters.

Although they don't stack up with 400+ power and speed wise (within reason here), they can be quite fuel economic, and give the edge over 125's that are both slow and too small to be taken seriously by a cage. The difference between a 125 and a 250 is being able to confidently and briskly pull away from traffic lights without treating the machine like a slave in a BDSM environment. And, you have the physical size that can make a cager think twice about doing a silly manoeuvre, albeit only slightly less likely.
