Oh come on Ste, thats getting more than a little caried away.

Odie - it's a quid. For charity. It's harldy daylight robbery, and if you're that bothered you can always tag onto the run after its left the stadium.

How exactly are you showing support by just riding along? The point is to raise money and toys, so you bring money and toys. The rideout part is fun, gets people coming and probably gets some good press. Doesn't directly help the kids.

Damn right you shouldn't be allowed to partake in the fun if you're too tight to donate a quid. Nobody who owns a motorbike can get away with calling themselves 'poor'. Not donating is low.

Agree, it's about as tight as some of the people who came in the shop yesterday and didn't donate to the British Legion, but happily took a poppy away with them. Mad

Not showing support by going along and riding with them, but showing support by donating a toy. £1 really isn't much of a loss to most people who have bikes, most people are quite happy to donate it if they're going along, just struck me as slightly odd the way you're not welcomed to donate just a toy, if you want to go along you have to donate a toy and money and if you want to donate just a toy then you can't go on the run.

Yes it is about raising money and getting toys for kids, but surely something for charity is better than nothing. If going I would be quite happy to donate a toy & money, majority of people are of a similar mind but as shown in this thread not 100%.

You do show support by just riding along, as the more bikes there are showing support for the charity than the bigger impact it will have and raise the publics awareness of that charity.

Not wanting or trying to make this into a arguement over "omg I'm too tight to pay £1!!!" as it isn't asking much of people at all, just that saying you're only allowed on the ride if you donate some money puts some people off and will therefore mean less toys for the event. Penny Coin Penny Coin

OK can i just say, the day is about donations of toys & gifts... the cash is simply a bonus - the more cash we raise the more we can give to charity.

The money isn't the important issue with us but the donation of toys & gifts is. We can always raise the extra £ you don't wish to give by adding a few pense to the price of the badges & merchandise we sell instead but then this would be very unfair.

At one time we used to charge £2.50 per person but dropped the figure to £1 per bike simply as a lot of people decided to not pay... we actually found charging the £ we raised more money as more people were willing to pay that way.

Some people are never satisfied. After all like i say it is a donation, not a fee. if you want to pay £5 instead of £1 then you can pay that much... have a heart will you after all it is for charity & one day it may well be one of your kids that benefits from the cash we raise.

Along with all the good work we do for charity, these runs are here to promote the good work that motorcyclists do & also to show Joe public that once in a while we do worthwhile things for charity.... we don't want to show the public that bikers are too tight fisted to pay £1 to ride in a charity parade. My advise is if you don't want to pay £1 then please stay home & put your £1 in a fruit machine down the local pub instead where it will do a lot more good for charity... after all you are the one missing out.

Wow Ste, you really have got issues.
I think charging £1 is a great idea. You can count how much you have raised and donated, you get all the entertainment, which is never free, you get the bikes etc etc. As said, if you're having a hard time donating £1, just stay at home and type about how hard life is.
Toys are great, but kids need more than toys to enjoy life.

Sorry guys but i dont think you should have to pay / donate money to go on a run, be it a toy run or an egg run, it makes no odds. It should be YOU OWN desision if you wish to make a donation.
The money is not an issue, its the fact that you are being told before you even get there that you will pay.
If you dont mind me asking why was the fact that there was a charge/ donation required not mentioned before my post?

because it was assumed that you wouldn't be a tight arse and would willingly donate the £1 to go out and have some fun, obviously not and its no great loss if you don't go along because you have to pay £1!

FFS, as I've said I am not argueing over £1 being a fair donation, I have no problem at all with make a donation if going along to something like the toy run type event. I was saying that a suggested donation amount would be better, as there are some people who are not happy to donate money as well as a toy donation and that by saying you have to donate both means you're missing out on the donations of toys from people who aren't happy to donate both, as surely having a toy donated from someone is better than having nothing donated.

I'll say it once again just in case anyone has missed it again, I do not have a problem with being asked for a money donation at event like this one, repeat do not.

OK i've added a picture of our toy run poster you will CLEARLY see the words "£1 DONATION PLUS A TOY AT START GIVES ACCESS TO KINGS HALL, STOKE AND ENTRY TO PRIZE RAFFLE" printed in the text on the poster.

A lot of you have commented on the Pet food run & how good it was.. OK what about if we adopt their policy... & charge £2 per person + a gift instead of paying £1 + a gift of an Easter egg or toy for christmas.

Why do we do toy / egg / pet food /blanket etc runs for?
Honestly why do we do these things.
We do them because it makes us feel good!
I am not knocking this toy run, far from it, i think that its an exellent idea and has been from day 1.
I just feel that a charge is wrong and that a donation should be offered not asked for, thats all, if its a donation you should offer it not be asked for it.

Its the only place (stoke) that does this and i dont think its right.
If it isnt i appolagise and i will be doing the toy run, if it is then i will do the pet food run in derby on the 18th december.
I also feel that it shouldnt be down to us to provide toys for the kids (nothing against them, i love children, just cannot eat a whole one any-more (LOL) i feel that it should be down to the local councils!

Well i must say i have never read anything that as upset me more the when this has.Ok i don't ride myself but i do go the run's every year now and if i had to give £5 each time i went i would do so. I no when that £1 goes in that collection box it will go some were were it's needed (Anyway i'll be there taking photoe's to put on the website ) Give up your dummy and think how many childern you are helping

If it had been some "Crack Wh-re" with a knife asking for money would it be different?

But that's a completely different kettle of fish. Being threatened by some druggie is QUITE different to charity.

It can't be any worse than Oxfam/NSPCC/RSPCA (delete as appropriate) banging on about giving them £2 a month, of which I know most of it will go towards administration costs anyway.

This is a one off event, like Children in Need (Even though it seems to be happening more often. Laughing ) so it is not like you are giving £1 a week. If they didn't ask for £1 nobody would give any money at all.

OK Odie... as the poster says a £1 donation...that is all is asked for, if you want to pay £20 then pay that. if you are to tight to pay a quid or object to that fact then fine... you are obviously not the kind of rider we need taking part on the run.

Although read the following
the FAQ pages on the Stoke bikers site wrote:
Where does all the money go?

Income is derived from a variety of sources such as raffles, admission fees, merchandising profits, fund raising parties and donations. This can often amount to a substantial quantity of money. However, the event costs a lot of money to put on. Costs include hire of Kings Hall, entertainment hire, printing costs, postage...etc. All people involved with the organization of this event are volunteers and do NOT receive any payment. When all the bills have been paid the money left over is handed over to the charity fund which is then in turn assigned to needy causes & under privileged children. The causes we donate out to are always usually local children's charities and appeals. Where possible we try to present a cheque on stage at the next event so that you can see where your money has gone. Alternatively we try to get local press coverage.

and also

Stoke bikers website wrote:
What happens when I reach the start?

When you reach the start point, marshals will collect your eggs or toys (depending on the run) and your entrance fee of £1. You will be directed by marshals to a suitable parking area. If you have time you can then have a coffee and look at the other bikes, Marshals will then signal the start of the run & will lead the way.

All the event will cost you is £1. for a fee like that you get a chance to ride & take part in one of the UK's biggest motorcycling events & you also get access to the other features of the day, where there are loads of other things for you on offer. Where else can you get all that for a quid?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What happens when I reach the end?

The run will finish at Kings Hall. Park your bike and go into the hall. There is no charge to come into the hall for those that have paid to go on the run. If you have not been on the run we ask you to make a donation of £1 per person.

If you have not already handed in your gifts of eggs or toys at the start of the run, or perhaps you have collected some gifts from passers by, people at the roadside or from well-wishers to drop off donations on their behalf, marshals & social services staff will be waiting to collect them.

So that should cover that argument as well.

Odie & Ste, I issue you both a challenge.. can you find any bikers event where you can get the features what we put on offer
* a chance to take part in the UK's longest running Toy run charity parade
* Admission to a concert with a live band
* entry to a prize draw where you could win heaps of prizes - in the past we even gave away a brand new Triumph motorcycle.
* a show consisting of thousands of bikes
* one of the UK's largest biker meetings on the calender - if not the largest UK toy run event.
* a show of exhibits & trade stalls

can you find all that or anywhere else that does anything as good or better for under a quid.

I'll even give you a head start for your search (cos i'm charitable unlike some)....

https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=motorcycle+events+for+less+than+%C2%A31&btnG=Search&meta=cr%3DcountryUK%7CcountryGB

let me know how you go on.....

It is fair enough that you have to donate something if you want to go along, the toy run is primarily about gather toys for kids, the day being a good day for everyone who takes part isn't the main objective of the day, they are not organising it all so you can go along and take part in the ride around, as the ride wouldn't be quite as godo publicity if all they could say was "look, all the bikers came along to our charity event but most of them where too tight fisted to donate a toy or some money!". Yes being on the ride adds support but it doesn't really mean much if you havn't given anything to them.
Odie wrote:

I don't think anyone is argueing that the ride being fun is the reason why people want to go, as if they just wanted to give something to charity they don't have to wait until the toy run you can do it from home if thats all you want to do. If you just want to feel good by giving something to charity there are much easier ways to do that.

Ok if you don't want to give anything then don't go we don't need people like you to spoll it for all the other biker's and spectators that enjoy them selves

No i don't ride (as i'm disabled & cannot ride a bike) but i do help in anyway i can as it is a worthwhile cause. if it wasn't for the Stoke Toy run then there probably would never of been a toy or egg run in the UK at all.

I've also been along to some of the Stoke bikers weekly commitee meetings & witnessed some of the hard work the small group of individuals who organise the toy & egg run do. When you have seen the commitment that i have then it really is no wonder why i'd rather donate 5 times the £1 you object so much to paying.

If buying a toy for the run, shop around, you may well save yourself a quid by buying your toy from somewhere else then you should have no excuse for not paying a quid as you wouldn't miss it. Also you could if you wish donate a 2nd hand toy from out of your loft or buy one from a charity shop for just a few pence then 2 charities would benefit, not just one.

Look this is getting out of hand, people are entitled to their own opinions, if you dont like it then fine thats your problem, no need to go labeling them tight etc because you dont agree with their opinion.
Toy runs are exellent, i always put money in the bucket / hat etc, i just dont like being told how much to put in.

No Odie, you are the one with the problem here.. a very serious one. I notice you are plugging the Derby Pet food run in another thread on this site.. well that just shows you must be jealous - if it wasn't for the Stoke Toy run I doubt very much the Pet food run would exist as we were the 1st in the UK to hold an event of this type - we lead others followed...the only bike run that is older is of course the jumbo run which is completely different.

How would you like if i came along to your precious pet-food run you are plugging & started moaning & groaning & shouting my mouth of about how I had to go to tesco & spend 49p on a tin of chappie dog food just so i could take part in this stupid bike run when all i want to do is ride my bike around for a bit.

I take it the reason for your somewhat back pedalling now is because you have yet to find anywhere else like the Stoke toy run that offers all that for a quid.... the answer shouldn't of been that hard to find... try the Stoke Egg run which will be about 4 months after the toy run & again will cost you just £1.

I really don't like getting my hair off against fellow bikers especially when i am promoting the Stoke toy run in the run up to an event but you my friend have really taken the biscuit on this occasion.

Whatever is the case, there is little need to get bitchy about things. It won't help your cause much if the thread is just a bitter debate of the rights and wrongs of money donation imo.

A pound here or there will not make a difference to either the donators or the receivers, so arguing with one particular individual over whether they are going to donate a single pound seems a little pointless.

Incidentally, I'd love to come along and donate from my meagre (remaining overdraft limit Sad ), were I not busy with goodness knows what uni work and only a 125 to travel a long distance on.

So can people expect in a few year not to be allowed on the run unless you can show a receipt to prove that your donated toy is worth at least £x?

No I (me personally) do not have a problem with paying £1 to go one something like that. I just think it's daft saying that if you just want to donate a toy for whatever reason then you're not welcomed, surely something is better than nothing.
