I'm told that such things exist, but I'm not having the easiest time finding cheap-ish ones (i.e. less than £15 a pair) in my size; I'm a UK12 (EU47), and I'd want to buy a few pairs, ideally. Does anyone have any recommended suppliers? I've spotted cheaper pairs going in more orthodox sizes on t'interwebs, but since toe removal isn't an option, I throw myself upon the mercies of BCF's resident bargainmonkeys.

After a search I think your on the money with them, not helping that you have large feet, army surplus seems the best place to look.
A cheaper way would be a tesco bag over your socks Laughing

£15 for Gore-tex socks is pretty good.

Consider that these socks will give you a waterproof solution considerably cheaper that a new pair of boots...

I picked mine up for a tenner at an army surplus show, in size 12s, they have been more than worth it in the 4 years ive owned them.

Check out sealskin socks too, heard good reviews about them from friends who use them, the goretex ones can start to seperate the outer from the liner sometimes.

Cheers
John

Look for a make called SealSkinz. Seriously good socks, fully waterproof and immersible with a merino wool lining. You can find unbranded army versions for around £12-8 on ebay! Very Happy They do multiple lengths from normal ankle socks, mid length and knee length ones. I've used a pair for around 4 years now and they've never let anything through. Wear them quite often while hiking and they are very comfy and warm. Hth.

I used those £9 army surplus gore-tex socks when I had boots that let water in. Worked quite well and I'd recommend them. However, I prefer wearing waterproof boots. Woollen sock and waterproof boot vs thin woollen sock and gore-tex sock and soggy boot.

When camping I usually take a pair of gore-tex socks as backup...double as waterproof stash receptacles too.

Cool. Thanks all - I'm going to take a punt on the eBay ones linked, because at £11 for two pairs, they're more in the price range I was hoping for. I'm not intrinsically tight (well, not significantly so) but I go through socks pretty fast, so I don't want to drop a ton of cash on something that won't last very long.

If these don't pan out, I'll have a crack at those Seal Skinz - there's a few people that have recommended them, although at £25 a pair, they're a little steep for me.

HT - I've just shelled out for a pair of Sidi Couriers, which I'm told aren't waterproof, hence the GoreTex question. I need a pair of boots that can ward off the evils of minicabs, and my current ones just aren't... reinforced... enough for it.

I bought sealskins and wore them once or twice. The keep your feet dry but if your boots are a 'good' fit the sealskins will make them Tight with a capital 'fkn'.

I gave up with socks and now I only buy Gortex* boots. I can wear any socks I like then and stay dry. (Like those cool panty liners they advertise on TV.)

FWIW Waterproof boots are absolooteleh useless if your troos are tucked inside the boots though. Embarassed
