now i've got my test booked!

been looking at lots of topics recently, and many of them have been about tests and so on, so i though, why don't i do it? booked it today for this thursday at 8.40.
like the others, im getting a little worried about failing on the supid u-turn, but i would like to know more about lifesavers. i was talking to my brother and he said you need to look over your right shoulder whenever the scenario changes, e.g speed limit change. but what about turning left into minor roads? do you check both shoulders? and what about the emergency stop? if you lock up the rear through excessive engine braking, what will happen?
any more information would be greatly appreciated.

Your instructor should go into great lengths as to when to do your life saver. If he or she doesn't, ask them, it can't hurt.

When you do an emergency stop and your rear wheel locks up just gently ease of and reapply, but it does also depend on what type of braking system you have. When I took my test, the bike had a drum brake on the rear which I don't know about any one else but I found it very hard too lock up. But since I've owned my own larger bike which has disc brakes I found just gentle application of the rear brake and control it using the front brake, but again your instructor should go through all this with you. Just remember everybody is different and the instructor may give you hint to help your particular braking abilities.

thanks a lot people really helpul stuff . i was getting worried as my only instructor is you guys!. ive been riding for 8 months now on my gs and could do without paying for training, so i hope i pass first time!

does anyone know if a sticker L plate is acceptable if placed on the screen? my fork one broke off, and i don't have a proper replacement, so should it be alright?

nope! its practical. booked on saturday for thursday. 5 days ain't bad! well, its a short notice one, so if examiner is away, i lose my 48 pounds. nearest normal test booking was 1st of december, so it wasn't too bad.

I was told that the braking exercise is just that, a braking exercise and not an emergancy stop. You should not be braking hard enough to lock up. Remember, you're not expected do more than 20mph when aproaching the examiner, and if it's wet you may go slower. Stop in a straight line, and do not worry about mirrors or shoulder checks, as it is the examiner's responcibility to check for other traffic. However, when you pull into the side of the road afterwards, you must first remember to look and do mirrors, and also do a left lifesaver.

This conflicts with what Instigator says, but i always downshifted whilst stopping during both training and test, and was never told off for this. I was also told ride the bike into the side of the road. Whichever advice you take, make sure you do the required checks first, since both ways are equally safe if you do.


Another thing that I thought important, was that when the examiner tells you to pull into the side, you should select the place yourself. You do not need to pull into a slightly dodgy place, if you can see a better space further up. This is important for the U-Turn, since if there are lots of parked cars about you'll find it difficult to check the road is clear properly. The exception to this is if the examiner specifically tells you to pull up behind something. On my test i was asked to pull up behind a parked car, which i guess was to test my safety/observation when pulling out behind an obstruction. Whatever you do, do not forget all the rules about stopping when you get back to the test center, as the the examiner may tell you stop on the road. I rode a fair way past the center in order to stop in the easiest place - If you were to stop near a junction, or infront of somebody's drive, then he would fault you for it.
