Hi,
Partner came home from work today upset at being accused of causing damage to a car in a car park.

To keep this short, as we need advice on next steps quick, she hasn't actually caused this damage, but a 'witness' (a friend of the accuser) is saying she did it.

There is no damage/marks of any description on our car, but she is saying that a dent on her car was caused by my parter. Damage descirbed is completely inconsistent even if there had been a bump.

Partner has not seen the damage to the others car, as she had to start work. But the accuser has given my partner her phone number and told her to get in touch (and has taken our reg number).

What do we do next?

Everything is legit, and there is no way my partner hit the car, due to the circumstances.

Thanks

tell her not to worry. as the witness is a friend there is no indipentent witness so the police wouldn't waste there time my guess insurance company would be the same

Take pictures of your vehicle, if there was any damage to the other persons car, paint would of rubbed off yours onto theirs and visa versa...

also note the area where the damage is on the other vehicle like how far off the ground that part of the vehicle is and compare it to your vehicle at the same height

Ok thanks for all the advice!

Unfortunately there is no CCTV covering the car park, so its her word against ours.

But, it is completely impossible for it to have happened.

So, will ignore it and see what happens!

Thanks guys

edit:
Phoned 101 just to log a call with them, lady on the phone said they had nothing on record from the accuser so not to worry about it.

Go to the police and tell them you are a victim of a scam. Get a crime refference number for it. Then if they do try to push it keep informing the p[olice and inform the scammers you have done so.

I'm slightly uneasy about that advice - based on the kind of posts i read on here i'd expect the police to ignore everything you say about the third party and only record the bit where you admit to parking in the same car park. And anything else you may say that'll help toward a 'failure to provide details' charge.

After all, that 'friend' is simply going to say they don't know the accuser personally, and they were a 'concerned witness' who left their details.

So going to the police and giving them information linking you to the time and area... seems a little risky to me. Hopefully i'm just being paranoid. Hopefully.

i think you are being paranoid, too many car damage scammers out there now that even the police are getting fed up with them.

No. The police are results driven. They do not care who did what. They only care that there is a result in there somewhere. If they show interest, it will simply be to go after the individual that it is easiest to go after, right or wrong.

our company was accused of damaging a car in a carpark, we went out to look as we had been erecting scaffolding there, the accusation was that e had reversed into the side of a car.

On checking the damage, it was obvious that a yellow vehicle was responsible for hitting her car and a much lower one than our blue and white 7.5 tonne wagon. it doesnt matter how lightly you hit something, there will be a mark.

Whether or not the police are informed, people who blame others will soon disappear if the person has at lest a crime number or reference regards the accusations.

If there is every a doubt I involve the police, okay so theres only been three occasions ever but ive never had to prove anything, the person accusing or denying blame had to.

Just to update this, nothing has come of it.

So clearly, the woman was just trying to find someone to blame for the damage.

Logging it with 101 eased any anxiety and the police woman said not to worry about it. So all good.

Thanks for the advise.

^^This.

A true story:
A mate of my Dad rented a lock-up garage from the local council. He only used it to store his car, there was nothing else in it, so when the car was out he would leave the garage door open.

He arrived at the garage one day to discover the door closed and a 'Truckman' type pick-up hardtop inside his garage.

He carefully moved it onto a nearby grass verge, where it stayed for a week until it eventually disappeared one day.

A couple of days later, he got a knock on the door from the coppers asking if he knew anything about a stolen Truckman top.

'Oh yes', he said, 'I do know about that, I found it in my garage so I moved it out and put it on some grass near my garage.'

At that point, he was arrested and taken off down to the nick, put in a cell, interviewed and then charged with theft.

It later transpired that the local council had renumbered the garages on their plan, but not actually renumbered the garages themselves. So, they'd rented garage number 11 (on the plan) to Mr Truckman top owner, but the actual garage numbered 11 was the one rented by my Dad's mate.

Eventually the charges were dropped, but it caused him a long period of intense worry.

Moral of the story - never expect coppers to display even a glimmer of intelligence + never say anything at all to them about anything, ever.
