Well... I cancelled my gym so it doesn't auto renew.

Apparently I submitted this too late... so I owe them additional money.

I'm currently asking them for my initial contract sign up date and a copy of what I signed... what else can I do?

Auto renwewal and silence as acceptance won't stand up in a court of law.

There are very few occassions where silence can be acceptance.

https://www.legalmatch.com/law-library/article/silence-as-acceptance-in-contracts.html

Companies will say oh but my microprint says we can auto renew but its not really enforcable to put an unfair term in a contract either.

Loads of companies and bosses try this on because lots of people don't understand the law and explitative people er exploit this.

Dunno civil stuff, but I'd be offering them a trip to the Financial Ombudsman Service and asking them where they explained clearly that I was signing up to a lifetime contract with an option to terminate once a year.

following on from roger, i believe auto renewing contracts were outlawed, once a contract expires it automaticaly reverts to 30 days, so even if you missed the 30 days notice before the next payment, the very MOST you will have to pay would be 1 more month, and something to bear in mind, a gym membership does not constitute a consumer credit agreement (that is just incase they do not let you cancel and try to send bailiffs after you)

Derp, I forgot to follow up.

Check the contract (if there is one), see under what conditions they can terminate your membership.

Assert that equitable terms apply to you. If they can terminate at any time, so can you.
