Evening all,

Just a quick one for you...

I have just taken my old and new cars V5s and MOTs to the DVLA office (reluctantly) and rather than give me new tax discs and MOT there and then (like last time I did it) I have to wait 7 days for the stuff to come through the post.

What has changed since last time (under 2 years ago)?

On a sidenote, how long am I likely to get away with my old car being un-insured for? I was on the understanding that you need continuous insurance, but frankly I've already waited 2+ weeks for the new V5 to arrive in order to even swap my plates over, now I have to wait up to a month for the new V5's to come back before I can sell..

Thank you BCF

I'd be more worried about the insurance than the plate tbh. Why is it not insured? Confused

They've streamlined their process to be more efficient?

I mean, for them.

Eh, same with registering a new vehicle, they used to give you a number on the spot and check it later, but that was apparently too helpful.

I didn't get a reminder until at least a month had passed.

They can't be too strict, since technically you're a filthy criminal for the moment an uninsured SORNed vehicle changes keeper, since you can't SORN it until you know you're the new keeper.

So there has to be some leeway. I got loads of those "Pay up or else" letters before I finally SORNed the vehicles, then the issue just went away.

Nothing changed, you hit it lucky last time that's all. Sometimes they do it there and then others they don't, luck of the draw.

Never caused me any major problems in the past.

Both cars are currently insured, however when I bought my new car I took out temporary cover on my old car to see me through the selling process, but it's been almost a month and I don't want to pay another £80 to insure it for a month.

I won't bother re-insure the old car then, and just hope for the best Laughing It will be for a month maximum. So they just send you a reminder to say you need to insure it?

Cheers

Also,

What are the chances of me getting the original number plate back that was on there before I put my private one on?

Unless there was anything special about the one you took off it's virtually guaranteed.

Brilliant!

I'm sure I read somewhere that they were planning on closing most local DVLA's, what havoc is that going to cause?! Think of all the dealerships that go in on a daily basis. Also, think of the untold havoc Swansea will create when there aren't any local ones.

Still haven't received anything back, the lady said 7 days, it's been 9, getting impatient now and I know how incompetent the DVLA can be so worrying they've lost my documents!

Quick update, the V5's have turned up, but the MOT and Tax discs haven't, where does that leave me? If I'm driving round on the old numberplates then they won't be recognised will they?
