XJ600 opinions?

Been offered a fairly old Yams XJ600, late eighties I believe, 2 owners since new, 30k miles, In this colour scheme

At the moment it's an MOT failure, it'll need a new battery (not an mot failure I know), new head bearings I think, new brakepads (simplicity itself). And just a bit of love/thrashing.

£500.

makes 72bhp, so I'd have to get it restricted.

Anyone got an XJ600? ridden one? know how well it might take to restriction.

And I'm gonna go right ahead and assume insurance will absolutely rape me.

Seems pricey. For comparison I will be selling my XJ600 Divvy for around £800~£900 soon. Higher mielage, but better built, newer and with an MOT.

hmm, when you put it like that...

the divvy is a nicer bike, shaft drive aswell unless I'm mistaken?

I'm taking my dad to take a look at the bike soon, as long as he deems it in good shape we'll make an offer accordingly, thanks for the advice kickstart.

I hope getting it restricted isn't a problem, and that it's not too much for a young inexperienced rider to handle.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i think its only the 900 that is shaft drive.

I'm thinking of getting one too, restricted - seems to do everything I want!

I've heard they're good for getting from A to B, but don't quite have the fun raiting there!

Well, at 72bhp for the 600 I'd say it's got plenty of poke to kill novice bikers like us. I think I'd have plenty of fun.

they're very very cheap. There's one on bike trader at the moment for £695 with a years MOT, new tires, all good condition.

In their time they were the fastest 600 available (84ish I think).

It seems like a damn good, if a little quick bike for a second bike.

Upsides:
Not too afraid to drop it (it's not very pretty)
Comfortable, designed for commuting
Cheap

Downsides:
Possibly a little quick for someone just coming off a 125.
Not very pretty
Spares aren't in abundance, but they're not too bad.

Swings and roundabouts, I think it'd suit me very nicely.

Personally I think it is just about perfect as a first big bike. Reasonable go, but no visious power band. Heavy enough for you to get used to the weight. Cheap enough that when you drop it you will not be too upet.

Suspect realistic power is around 60hp.

With Yamaha you find they tend to use the same parts on quite a few bikes, so spares should not be too much of a problem.

I did my DAS on them, they're very forgiving bikes. Motad exhausts make them sounds a bit limp though.
They'd be an excellent choice for a first big bike I should think, and don't look too bad with crash bars on either.
