given the equation 3a+4b=33
a must be 3 so 3a=9
4b =33-9 24 so b=6
but how to you work it out

?really bugging me ?

So the question is: 3a+4b=33, when a =3 find b?

1. Substitute in your known values
2. Remove the integer (whole number from the LHS - left hand side) by subtraction.
4. Divide RHS (right hand side) by the coefficient of b - thats the 4.

3a+4b = 33

(3x3) + 4b = 33

9 + 4b = 33 ------------- Subtract 9 from both sides

4b = 24 --------------- divide both sides by 4

b = 6

Remember to stay equal any operation you do, you must do to both sides of the equation. As long as you follow that rule, you can't go too far wrong.

Tomorrow I'll post a pic from the maths test I had today Laughing Shocked

Didn't you cover this stuff at school? Algebra doesn't get much more basic than that*.

Smegballs has it right. The only thing I might do is include the line

4b = 33 - 9

Between

9 + 4b = 33

And

4b = 24

For total clarity.

*of course you might currently be at school, in which case I apologise.

What do I do to prove the values if we didnt already know what a and b were....

3a + 4b = 33

If you don't know a OR b, there are multiple answers that are possible.

Just limiting yourself to positive integer values gets you the following:

a = 11, b = 0
a = 7, b = 3
a = 3, b = 6

How does it work? This case is simple enough that you can basically try different numbers until it works.

If you want to prove the a = 3, b = 6 solution...

3(3) + 4(6)
9 + 24
33.

Works.

You couldn't solve it! As said there will be multiple solutions.

However you can solve when you have two pairs of eqns:

2a + 4b = 20

a - b = -2

See if you can work out the values of a and b.

Hint: You'll want to google something called simultaneous eqns.

To begin with though, may I direct your attention to this wonderful website: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/solving-linear-equations-and-inequalities

Get comfortable with basic equation manipulation before moving onto harder stuff.

Same here (again software). My missus was a carpenter and prop maker, she also needed it occasionally.

Calculus may be obscure enough to mean most people avoid it outside their school lives, but basic algebra is all around us.

Replace "Algebra" with "Welsh" and it holds though.

I protest, it's also used widely to confuse English people! Very Happy

It's a strange feeling being in a Welsh hospital and the doctors and nurses that you talk to seem to start a sentence in English and then finish it in Welsh. Laughing
