Had a nice morning at North Oxford BMW, staff were well organized and had plenty of time to answer questions and queries :thumb2

Always a pleasure to deal with.

According to Bike magazine it still gets 70% of it's cooling from air cooling. They asked if running without any coolant was possible though, and BMW responded that it would damage the engine...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Those radiators look awfully exposed if the bike was dropped. Confused

I bet they're great to ride if you're clocking up good distance, but my god they are - to my eye - utterly hideous. It has no lines. No wait - it has so many that it's just a confused mess of trestle, trellis, tube, bar and strut. The most inelegant piece of machinery I've ever seen, certainly in a bike. In a word - carbuncular.

With that engine design there is no way to put it in the normal position though. Perhaps they should have employed the Benelli designer Whistle

Always a personal opinion, but SO UGLY.

I love the look of old BMW boxers. I quite like the single they made (650cc?). But these look like they have come from the 1970s TV show Buck Rogers. It looks to me like a committee design, with everyone adding their own bits. It would have been far better to start again from a standard traditional layout.

So is the new ktm 1190. I have almost no options for a new bike except the 1190 R.
The only real big off road adv market is SA and Oz so I guess a very small market globlally. most yank gravel roads are private. Kiwis seem to trailer their bikes to gravel areas.

Don't think I would consider this new bmw

They must be getting the thing through a new round of emissions standards. Otherwise cannot see why they bothered.

I heard the same. Europe too small a market to bother for DS bikes. They targetting the USA with strict emission regulations.

Be interesting to see the sale of GS bikes globally. I bet europe is minsicule. You don't have the roads for it. Its either plastics for green laning, sports or sports tourers. Then scoots or 125 for congested narrow streets in cities

I'd say after the honda cbf's the gs is probably the second most common of the newish big bikes around London so im not so sure how tiny a market share it can be.

Why would you have a bike like that in london of all places? Where will you ride it?

BMW are somewhat hampered by their famous boxer twin engine layout. Many enthusiasts only consider it a proper BMW if it is a boxer twin. But they are then forced to make so many fudges & compromises to design a modern performance machine, but retain this engine layout.

Harleys are the same. It will only sell as a V twin. And customers don't want to see a radiator so they have to hide the water cooling system and so on. Just so it looks old but performs new.

Having said that, there is no excuse for ugly.

I agree on the subject of that K1. Retinal damage on this scale deserves recognition & praise.

The same reason people use Range Rovers and other big four wheel drive vehicles in London, in case they have to bump up a kerb.

To be honest the fans of them say the height helps with spotting gaps in the traffic and the engine characteristics make flitting through gaps in traffic easy. Each to their own I suppose; Some people thought I was mad for commuting daily on my cbr, but for me it was perfect, not much wider than a 125 once I'd removed the mirrors, low bars went under almost all car mirrors, and a revvy engine so keeping on the power was easy when needed. Plenty of people consider my divvy900 to be perfect for London with it's shaft drive, big tank and comfy seat but personally I find it too wide, too lardy and not revvy enough.
