ZX7R or GSXR750 K1

By scrimping and saving, in the next couple of months or so i should have the funds to get a new bike but I’m seriously unsure as to which bike to get. I have always loved the ZX7R ever since i was a kid and also the GSXR 750 K1 and to be honest I’m finding it hard to single one out as the better buy. Generally i've found the ninjas’ are slightly cheaper which could be a good or bad thing I know the general answer would be to go for a test ride but thought i'd throw it out to the masses and see if any owners/ ex owners could shine some light onto the pros and cons for each. I fancy a step up from my ZX6R but a 1000 is out of the question at the moment due to insurance being ridiculous

ZX7R is the significantly prettier bike. Evoboy is selling one down in the classifieds too. Should be looked after since he is a professional mechanic!

I would go for GSXR750 K1.. and they come with FI as well which I think of as a bonus. Just my 2p.

Would always vote for the GSXR750. Had one, loved it. It has a bit more grunt lower down and higher up it just keeps going. I got to a certain speed on the clocks, it then broke the speedo.

Suzuki GSXR K1 750 all the way is my opinion.

From reviews ive read about the zx7r is its a great bike but heavy as heck and is no faster than a sports 600cc, whereas the GSXR750 is faster than the sports 600ccs and weighs alot less plus it has a fuel warning light lol!
The zx7r does not infact most of the old zxrs dont have a fuel waring light which is why i never got them screw riding then have to reach down and switch to reserve when your 70mph on the motorway and its starts to die as you have to switch to reserve!

Before i got my R6 back in 2004 i was after either zx7r, zx6r but was put off buy the no fuel reserve light.

I think the 7r's with the black frame like you posted a picture of are actually 7rr's which makes a difference to the insurance, or did when I was looking. I mention it because IMO they are significantly better looking than the silver framed ones, they came in nicer colours, the purple doesn't really do it for me:

A choice between two also-rans. For the retro, I'd go for the Yam FZR every time, for the more modern, any 6 or 1000 rather than a backwater 750. I know insurance is a killer on the big stuff, but most of the 6's will do anything that the Suzy will, with styling to suit.

Takes alot to unsettle a zx7r.

Being lightweight is all well and good, but it CAN make the bike more skittish on the road if the suspension isnt setup correctly.

The zx7r is planted mainly due to its weight. Which you dont really notice on the move. Its also got quite a long reach, so if your a shorter person, it is quite a stretch to the bars. It also may be as fast as a 600, but it has much more grunt and a wonderful induction roar.

Comparing it to a K1 750 is a bit of a no brainer in terms of technological advancements. The 7r went pretty much unchanged its whole production life. (96 to 03 i think!), while the GSXR was updated 3 times. Its more on par with a carbed SRAD.

The GSXR feels like a more modern bike, because it is. Engine revs like a 600, feels about the same weight as a 600 etc etc.

Cant say i ever had a problem riding with more modern bikes on my 7r. Used to be able to carry some monster corner speed on the thing. Suprising really due to the weight!

When i got my K2 750 back in 2005 it pissed all over the ZX7r my friend had.

The 7R would be the one for me! I like Kawk's and I don't like the fact that every K1-K5 GSXR looks near enough the same whether it's a 600/750/1000. I can see the logic in those that are suggesting a more modern newish 600 over either of these.

I couldn't use 1/2 the abilities of either bike, so i'd pick for looks and attitude and in those area's the Kawasaki makes the GSXR look invisible in comparison.

There's lots of tweaks you can do to the 7R and they do tend to be long term owned for years, so finding a looked after and nicely modded one would not be too hard I would think, as they are a bit of a cult 750. You can also put a B-series ZX9 motor in them as a future project, and a well sorted ZX7/9 must be a nice bit of kit to ride.

I'd still also consider a 98-99 Fireblade if they are insurable, as they won't be affordable for that much longer, and are a really nice machine too.

I have a P6 2002 ZX7R. Love it.
It's a heavy big machine with a fair reach to the bars. Kinda makes you feel your're in the bike, but once you get going it's good enough.
Mines is -1 on front and +1 on rear. Full Kroppy system and ignition advancer.
It is plenty fast enough for me on the public roads. It goes forward fast enough without it's nose going skyward like some shorter wheelbased bikes.

I had a go on my mates GSXR , same as the photo. It felt positively anorexic. Lovely bike. Just not for me.

Have a shot on both .

The 7R has carb's, which makes it a much better bike, that's why they're a future classic. It's a stunning looking, scarily fast bike, I'd have one in a heartbeat
