Any reason for just a 2 stroke? And what sort of budget are you looking at?
DT125 is a popular 2 stroke sumo, looks pretty cool too. To be fair almost any bike will feel fast when compared to your current bike.
Quick look on ebay shows up some options
Aprilia MX 125
DT125
4 stroke sumo's gives you a few more options; xr125, xt125x, wr125x, dt125. ____________________ Theory test - 19/8/09, CBT - 11/10/09, MOD 1 - 16/8/10, MOD 2 - 27/10/10

Depends which side of the law you want to be on look for enduro spec 125 for more POWA! I.e. Husky WR125, KTM 125 EXC, GasGas EC125 etc. |

The Yamaha DT125X, Aprilia MX and SX125 and the Husquvarna SM125S are the most commonly available off the shelf 2stroke 125 road legal motards. They are all available at a learner legal 15bhp as well, and will make somewhere between 20-26bhp at the back wheel when de-restricted/tuned.
They have all been discontinued, and so any of these bikes you consider buying secondhand should always be brought on condition and not by model preference, unless your after a specific project bike instead. Further to that while looking for a decent example of the above, you might stumble accoss a tidy looked after older Supermoto model like for example: the KTM Sting, Yamaha TDR125, or a Cagiva Supercity etc. It would still be worth buying an older mid 90's bike if it was in excellent condition, but don't deliberately expect to find these bikes, most are dead or wrecks now.
There's also always converted 125 trail bikes that previous owners have built, and again if a tidy 125 traile pops up thats been well converted to SM spec, it's just as good as any factory SM spec machine.
The KTM125, TM125SM, Gas Gas 125's etc are all competition enduro bikes, converted by the factory to SM spec with 17" wheels and suspension and brake changes. They are non learner legal and stay non-learner legal for a restricted 33bhp licence, as they produce 35bhp+ (engine figures) and the power to weight ratio is too high for the restricted licence limit too. They all run on pre-mix fuel, and the impracticality of this along with high engine wear rates/ re-build intervals, coupled with higher road gearing make them not great to ride overall, and require alot of maintainence too.
You will see Youtube vids of Italian kids going to school on tuned KTM125's etc, but they are far from every day useable road machines IMO, and over here would be useless, as they would either get stolen the first time you park it anywhere, or get you banned within a week typically. |

DT's tend to be the best for power and reliability, Pre-04 ones are said to be quicker, though with the sm conversion can be expensive as the newer models, anything from about £1200+, Then you could get the Aprilia MX125, said to be quicker but less reliable.. quite prone to electrical problems aswell, though you could pick up one up for a grand if you're lucky. Then you've got the SX/RX 125's, they have the newer more restrictive engines so not AS fast as the older mx's but I have seen an SX125 with full arrow system and it fookin' shifted!
Husky's, KTM's TM Gas Gas etc, Basicly road going mx bikes, very quick but again as mentioned require a lot of maintenance and generally more expensive to buy, and then i'd say top of the tower price wise if the mx bikes that have been converted to road legal, e.g the Honda cr125, Kawasaki KX125.. generally command £2000+ And geared for the track so you wont really see past 65 but you'll be there before you know it..
So basically my advice get a DT happy days  ____________________ current; beemer 5 series! |
