I have always been a problem solver and logic appeals to me so I guess that I am left-brained according the left/right brain theory.

Anyone have suggestions for developing right-brain strengths?

And, for good measure, how about a poll on how you see yourself? Smile

You believe that people only use one side of their brain?

No, of course I don't believe that we use only one side of our brain it is to do with processing dominance with the theory being that left-brain handles things like logic whereas the right hemisphere is more involved in emotion... Thought this was common knowledge. Smile

I thought it was a myth. Anyway, I'm definitely logical over emotional, cannot stand people who get over emotional.

I think I used to be more left, but (somewhat annoyingly) if the right brain controls emotions, then I think childbirth (25 years ago) ran amok and took over.

Having a kid definitely made me more emotional than I used to be, which is irritating, cos I now cry at the drop of a hat. Perhaps my right brain just hadn't been sufficiently developed until then ...

Although severe emotional trauma also throws it into kilter and you have to struggle to get it back to an even level.

I do think, however, that if you are sentient (is that the right word?)about the control left or right have over your actions, then its possible to adjust which side is more dominant, even if only temporarily.

Cos I used to be very logical, what I thought as of very "male" in my thinking and general ways of things. But nowadays I have to make a conscious effort not to be an over-emotional being - because it could so easily take over my whole existence, and lead me down paths of latent hysteria that [whatever it is that controls my inner core] knows that I definitely do not want to go.

Hence why I put half and half, cos I think I can adjust it accordingly when I recognise I'm veering too much in the wrong (i.e., right) direction.

drawing on the right side of the brain by Betty Edwards.
Worked for the person doing the presentation Very Happy

Which side is the "creative" side? I suppose its the right side... Rolling Eyes

Cos not only did childbirth feck up my emotions, I'm sure it also eventually caused my writer's block.

I had a last minute spasm of uber-creativity when Anita was about 5, and then nothing ever since. I get fits and starts of ideas, but just can't actually sit down and write any more, and I used to churn out yards and yards of nonsense.

"The Serial Killers Convention" is currently buried deeper in my subconscience than most of my intended victims in the plot who should be embedded under concrete in assorted cellars by now Rolling Eyes

Although, of course, the advent of the internet may have something to do with it ... you lot get the benefit of my attention instead of my creative writing time.

I understand that the right-side is considered the creative side.

Thus my right brain is probably like a 80-a-day-smokers lung Rolling Eyes ... not only atrophied from lack of use, but over-infused with bloody female hormones Mad

Thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

I used to be prolific too. Now I just can't be arsed. I believe it's the inevitable nihilism of old age.

You can't use that excuse*
Many writers write LONG into their old age.

I'm sure its just about training yourself to do it again...

Probably because they had the good sense to write and not think.

Either no ones admitting to being 'right brained' or were all 'left brained' enough to stay alive on the road haha

Proper right-brained = left-handed. If you're right-handed you're mostly left-brained.

Back in the 70s I worked in a car body shop and noted that of the four painters three were left-handed.

Since then I have also noticed how a lot of 'creative-types' are left-handed and this all lends towards right-brain dominance.

So, whilst hardly scientific, it would seem to me to have an affect.

I have both left and right handed parents, siblings and children in my family.

My mum was left-handed, except they beat it out of her. My daughter is left-handed. I beat her anyway though.

There is that age old theory about the education system manafacturing majority left brain thinkers which undoubtably reduces everybodies chances of developing right brain thinker traits.

How do we develop them now?

Depends what type of learner you are, Audio? Visual? Kinetic? Intellectual, everyones a mixture of all, but we each have our biases. Once you figure out your bias, you know what stirs your creative thoughts. From there on - its like a muscle; you keep it stimulated, you watch it grow.
