 |
|
Hi All just wondering if anyone could help me?
I had a nasty spill a while ago, just got back on my bike (hornet 600) the bike suffered a bit, have managed to repair all the essential bits but the fuel
tank has a couple of dents in it .
Do i have to replace the tank? or does anyone know if i can get it repaired? (i live in London)
Thank's in advance |

Depends on the damage and how much your willing to pay, They can pull out the dents if they are easy or fill if not so easy, Only problem is this may cost more than a 2nd hand tank of Ebay. ____________________ My bikes are at https://www.bikepics.com/members/dynamight/ |

If it doesn't leak, there is no need to replace it except on an aesthetic basis. I have a tank that looks like a demnted chimpanzee attacked it with a lumphammer in each hand and it still passed the MOT.
Some dents can be popped out by pressurising the tank with an airline. Undertake this with great care as you can also end up with either a baloon-shaped piece of metal or a face full of shrapnel. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. The dent's are quite deep (was a 70mph + accident) how much would i expect to pay for a secondhand tank ? and are they easy to replace ?(not very mechanicaly minded) but can get by |

You could. Be aware that if the metal is creased, you will never get the dent out properly. You could probably do it yourself, just be careful. As I recall you block off the fuel tap then attach the airline to the filler via a big bung which you hold in place, if you think the pressure is getting too much, allow the bung to pop out.
Wear goggles and gloves.
NB: This is an old fashioned technique which works well on old brit and eastern block tanks. Japnese tanks are much thinner so take care. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

After my off on the hornet i had a look for tanks, Mint second hand tanks go for upwards of £75. Check www.hondahornet.co.uk to see it anyone is selling on at the moment and they will give advise on what to do.
If the tank isnt leeking and you dont like the look of the dints, baglax do a nice tank cover for the hornet.

Got similar damage to my cb500 tank.
TBH I think its good.
Makes it less desireable to theivong scum
+ when I get a bit of time off I may scrub the tank down and paint it matt black. Going for the cb500 Rat bike look |
